Min - Library Board - 2012 - 01/10 - RegularII ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY SPECIAL CALLED MEETING JANUARY 10, 2012 Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present With a quorum of Board Members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to order by Board Chair Cindy Briggs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2012, in the Board Room of the Allen Public Library, 300 North Allen Drive, Allen, Texas Reeular Aeenda Approve Minutes of the October 4, 2011 Regular Meeting. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Devita Widmer and seconded by Diane Knack the Board voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed to approve the October 4, 2011 minutes. The motion carried 2. Receive ALLen Reads Update. Jane Bennett presented an update on the 5" year of ALLen Reads The Friends of the Allen Public Library welcome ideas from the Library Advisory Board. The program started in 1998 in Seattle, Washington, to encourage reading An entire community reads one book, and the organizing group sponsors events to discuss that book In Allen, the average age is 34, and typically both parents work. Thus, Allen's program is family-oriented there is a main book, ajunior book, and a picture book. This year's theme is mystery The main selection is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, thejunior selections are the Sammy Keves series by Wendelin Van Draanen, who will be here on February 25, and the picture book is The Great Pie Search by Eileen Christelow. ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING JANUARY 10, 2012 PAGE The ALLen Reads Committee meets on the 2n° Monday of the month with representatives from the city, schools, libraries, and civic groups. Last year there were 19 book club discussions and 20,000 participants. The logo was designed a few years ago by a 9" grade contest winner. A brochure is published each year listing the events and activities. A Real Bookstore donates 10% to ALLen Reads if the selected books are purchased from their store. Purple Cow will give away ice cream coupons at programs on January 16 and 19 and at Target on February 25 as part of the ALLen Reads celebration of Dr. Seuss. The American Library Association will meet January 20-24 in Dallas Free passes to the exhibit hall are available 3. Review and Discuss September, October, and November 2011 Library Statistics. The Fiscal Year ended September 30 with 795,000 items checked out, 18,000 new titles added, 38500 program attendees, and 310,000 visitors Checkouts, new titles, and program attendance all increased from the previous year. Ideally, library use will increase at a faster rate than the city's population increases. In September, October, and November, Internet use continued to decrease W i- Fi usage remains very active. 4. Discuss Allen Library Week March 12-18, 2012. Although usually held in conjunction with National Library Week in April, the Library decided to change this year to Spring Break because of the number of activities already scheduled and the large number of patrons who will visit that week The Food for Fines food drive will take place all week and Celtic Night is scheduled for March 15. 5. Discuss Annual Library Board Report to the City Council. Cindy will present the report on March 13 at 7 p.m Please attend and wear name tags. Geoff suggested the inclusion of stories relating the impact of the Library on people's lives. 6. Discuss Library Goals for 2012. Funding from the Friends and Endowment Fund is critical as state funding to libraries has been virtually eliminated. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded a study by a consulting firm to determine how remaining state and federal funding can best be utilized. As the result of lively discussion, the Board decided that the goal for 2012 will be ADVOCACY accomplished by attendance at meetings, presentations to civic groups, sharing good news about the Library, supporting the Friends, and attending their meetings. 7. Review Calendar Items. Next meeting is February 7 at 6.30. The Friends meet on the 3rd Monday at 7 p.m. The Endowment Fund committee meets quarterly All City Council and Friends meetings will be included in future Board calendars. 8. Adjourn.
