Min - Library Board - 2009 - 06/02 - RegularALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING JUNE 2, 2009 Present Susan McDaniel, Vice -Chair Board Members: Donald Wing Tanya Gould Donna Drews Various Geoffrey Smith City Staff: Jeff Timbs, Director Dale Lackey, Sr. Administrative Assistant Tom Keener, Cultural Arts Deborah West, Children's Manager Guests: Julie Smetzer, Friends of the Allen Public Library Trent Armstrong — Allen Citizen Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present With a quorum of the Board Members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to order by Vice -Chair, Susan McDaniel, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in the Board Room of the Allen Public Library, 300 North Allen Drive, Allen, Texas, Reeular Agenda Approve Minutes of May 5, 2009 Regular Called Meeting. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Board Member, Donna Drews Various and a second by Board Member Geoffrey Smith, the Board voted five (5) for and none (0) opposed to approve the May 5, 2009 minutes. The motion carried. 2, Preview Planned Summer Reading Club Activities. Library Director, Jeff Timbs introduced the new Children's Service Manager, Deborah West to the library board. Deborah gave an update on the Summer Reading Program activities. There are a lot of fun programs planned. Some of these are Critterman, Read to Rover in which the children actually ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING JUNE 2, 2009 PAGE 2 read to a therapy dog. This helps children that struggle with reading. We have a Bubble Show, Tin Roof Tango, which is a music program and Whirl on a String. This is a YoYo program that teaches tricks and also gives a history of the Yoyo. Creature Teacher is another popular program with the kids, Kinder Music, a Magic Show, and the Great Texas Puppet Roundup in which the theme will be "Deep in the Heart of Texas" There will be craft programs at the end of the summer and we finish up with the bookclubs. The children can do a time log or reading log. If they read their 25 books they will get to choose a free book to keep and can also write their name on an armadillo or flower that goes up on the public bulletin board. Jeff handed out bookmarks for the teen programs. There will be various workshops for teens which include The Picture Book, Short Story, Comic Book, and a Photoshop. Preview Planned Cultural Arts Programs. Tom Keener discussed the various Cultural Arts Programs the library will be presenting for the rest of the year. We have movie night on Tuesdays and just finished a western series in June. In August we will be doing creature features. Children as well as adults come to these and we take suggestions on movies our patrons would like to see. Bach to Books is another program which we partner with other organizations. This is one of the things that came out of the citywide survey done a few years back. Citizens wanted more cultural programs. Bach to Books offers a wide variety of subjects and programs of social interest. 4. Receive Update on Board Vacancy. Shelley George is accepting applications for the library board vacancy Trent Armstrong has expressed an interest on serving on the library board. 5. Receive Update on the Public Art Project in the Library Courtyard. The public art sculpture will be installed mid September to early October. It will take about one week to install. The ceremony will be in early October. Bach to Books plans to have a program centered around the sculpture. 6. Receive Update on the Friends of the Library Endowment Fund. Dr. Joe Farmer, President of the Endowment Board sent out a letter and brochure with a donation form for donating to the Endowment Board in May. The Endowment Board is still considering fundraising options. 7. Receive Status Report on Proposed Library Security Policy. The library staff is still reviewing the Security Policy and plan to have an updated draft ready for the August Library Board meeting. 8. Review May 2009 Library Statistics. The board reviewed the May statistics and most all of the statistics are up significantly over May of last year H I 11 ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING JUNE 2, 2009 PAGE The Texas State Legislature did approve the Lone Star Grant program. The Texshare and K-12 databases will be funded at the same level for the next two years. We may loose some databases by next summer but will keep the most used ones. 9. Adjourn MOTION: Upon a motion made by Board Member, Tanya Gould and a second by Board Member Don Wing, the Board voted five (5) for and none (0) opposed to adjourn at 8:20 p.m. The motion carried.
