Min - Library Board - 2007 - 08/07 - RegularALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 7, 2007 Present: Jo Long, Board Chair Board members: Julia Elina Donna Drews Various Mary Jane Hamilton Donald Wing Susan McDaniel City Staff: Barbara Buehler, Library Director Tom Keener, Cultural Arts Coordinator Dale Lackey, Senior Administrative Assistant Guests: Jane Bennett — Friends of the Allen Public Library Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quomm of the Board members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to order by Board Chair, to Long, at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday August 7, 2007 in the Board Room of the Allen Public Library, 300 North Allen Drive, Allen, Texas. Regular Aeenda 1. Citizen's Comments. There were no Citizen Comments. 2. Approve Minutes of the July 10, 2007, Special Called Meeting. Motion: Upon A motion made by Board Member, Donald Wing, and a second by Board Member, Mary Jane Hamilton, the Board voted (6) for and none (0) opposed to approve the July 10, 2007 Special Called Meeting minutes with corrections. 3. Review Monthly Statistics and Suggestion Forms. The Library Board reviewed the Monthly Statistics and read all of the Suggestion Forms. The Library Board commented on the Internet use versus last year. It had almost doubled. I N ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 7, 2007 Status of Polaris Migration.. PAGE The library will he closed August 18" at 4 pm and all day on August 10 and 20" for the conversion to the new Polaris System. One of the nice things about Polaris is that it has a special catalog for the children's department. Update on FY 2007-2008 Budget. The annual budget retreat will be the weekend of August 10" The different city departments will be giving their presentations. Items of Interest. Barbara Buehler and board member Ruth Pringle attended the NETLS Awards Luncheon in Richardson. Ruth was elected to serve another term. NETLS budget is 1.4 million and $850,000 will be given out next year and the year after that will be $750,000. NETLS is planning on doing a fact gathering with 340 libraries to gather what their needs are. Allen will not be one of those. The smaller libraries will not be included and it will hurt the little guys. Tutor.com failed state-wide and the media will be taken out. 7. Planning for 40' Anniversary. 10. The board discussed activities planned for the whole month of October. There will be an essay contest and it will be advertised in the Friend's Newsletter and there will be forms at the library for each contestant to pick up with the rules of the contest. The library board will read andjudge each one. Gift cards will be given for the prizes. The kick-off will be October 6' with the City Manager of Dallas as our special speaker, special announcements, David Chicken program and a Birth day Party. Items of Interest Jill Stroud has nowjoined the Friends Board, which the Friends are expanding. The Friends have updated the book bags for adults and children. The children's will be a back pack instead of a bag. These will go on sale the week of the 40' anniversary kick-off. The annual Chocolate Orgy now Renamed as the Chocolate Celebration will be October 241h at 7 pm at the Senior Center in Allen. The theme for this year will be a "Beatles theme. The Allen Reads book will be announced at the kick-off. Cheryl Vargas is coordinating Allen Reads.
