Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present
With a quorum of the Board members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to
order by Cal Calvin, Board Chair at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday June 7, 2005, in the Board Room of the Allen Public
Library, 300 North Allen Drive, Allen, Texas.
1. Citizen's Comments.
There were no Citizen Comments.
2. Approve Minutes of the May 3, 2005, Regular Meeting.
The library board approved the May minutes with a correction. Board Member, Donald Wing was
added to the Board Members as being present.

11 3. Review Monthly Activity Report and Suggestion Box Forms.
The Board reviewed the Monthly Activity Report and read the Suggestion Box forms for May
The Suggestion Forms continue to receive complaints about the length of the walk from the parking lot
to the door. In addition, suggestions included bringing coffee into the library, the drop-off door should
be automatic, and a request for baby story time.
The Board asked about baby story time and Library Director, Barbara Buehler explained that parents
were looking for opportunities to teach their small children "Itsy, Bitsy Spider' and "Paddy Cake" type
activities.
4. Coffee Dreams Request.
Paul and Barb Granados, owners of Coffee Dreams, addressed the Board by explaining that their intent
was "not to be another Starbucks," but they were interested in supporting the community, and their
business was, in fact, about the community and relationships. They requested the Library Board
consider their request to allow patrons to bring drinks into the library. They estimated that this would
increase their business by forty percent. They further explained that they would be willing to address
maintenance issues such as spills inside the library.
Board Chair, Cal Calvin, read a petition, signed by 34 patrons, requesting coffee be allowed in the
library and auditorium
Motion: Upon A motion made by Board Member, John Ross, Jr., moved that the Library Board
recommend to the City Council to allow beverages (with lids) in the library (not in the auditorium) for a
trial period of three Board Member, Ruth Pringle, seconded and the board voted (6) for and none (0)
opposed to pass the motion.
5. Consider Facilitator Services.
Library Board Chair, Cal Calvin and Board Member, Ruth Pringle report on their meeting with Stacy
Turek, a corporate facilitator. She is to guide the board in establishing a five-year plan and helping the
Board brainstorm objectives, purpose, and projects. Both recommended the use of Ms. Turek's
facilitator services.
After a brief discussion of summer schedules, Cal Calvin volunteered to email Board Members
regarding their availability for meeting on a Saturday in August to schedule a workshop with Ms.
Turek.
6. Other Business
The following new business was discussed and/or addressed:

:• Getting information in August/September to area elementary schools for the purpose of
motivating children to get library cards.
:• The way individual libraries are funded by NETLS will now be enforced. Instead of being
automatically funded, libraries must apply through grants and must attend meetings for
funding.
Other NETLS business, patrons will be assessed $35.00 if they don't show up for a computer
class for which they have registered.
:• A NETLS workshop on dealing with change will be held at the Allen Public Library
• Auditorium on June 14, 2005 from 9:00 A.M. until 4'00 P.M.
