Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present
With a quorum of the Board members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to
order by Vice Chair, John Ross, (as Board Chair, Cal Calvin arrived late), at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November
05, 2002, in the Allen Library Meeting Room of the Allen Public Library, 2 Allen Civic Plaza, 301 Century
Parkway, Allen, Texas. Items discussed in the preceding meeting workshop included:
• Presentation re Arts of Collin County — Steve Matthews.
• Reports on Children's and Teens' Summer Programs and Activities.
• Review Monthly Activity Report and Suggestion Box Forms.
• Update on Friends' Activities.

1 2. Approve Minutes of the October 01, 2002, Regular Meeting.
Motion: Upon a motion made by Board member George Chrisman and a second by Board member Jo
Long, the Board voted (7) for and none (0) opposed to approve minutes of November 6, 2002 with a
correction on number 5 regular agenda clarified to read. an increase of 16,493 in foot traffic for fiscal
year 2001-2002.
The Board Chair, Cal Calvin arrived and proceeded with chairing the regular meeting.
3. Review Monthly Activity Report and Suggestion Box Forms.
The Monthly Activity Report was discussed. The reason for lowered activity on the internet was due to
the computers being down for 5 days for installation of new software and training.
Suggestion box forms were read and discussed.
Report on NETLS meeting — Ruth Pringle & Barbara Buehler.
Library Director, Barbara Buehler and Board member Ruth Pringle gave a report on the
NETLS meeting.
5. Review of Standards for Texas Public Libraries.
A discussion about the Standards for Tens Public Libraries was started. This will continue at future
Board meetings.
The first three sections of administration were looked at. These include the library board, long range
plan and written policies. approximately about half of these objectives have been achieved. The long-
range plan and some of the written policies need to be reviewed.
Update on Friends' Activities.
Sandy Wittsche of the Friends of the Allen Public Library was introduced and congratulated on the
success of the Chocolate Orgy Membership Drive. Sandy reported that approximately 100 attended the
Chocolate Orgy and new members were signed up. The Friends were thanked for their outstanding
participation with the library
"Food for Thought" The Legislative Breakfast is to be held Friday, November 15tb 2002 at 8:30 a.m.
in the Library. Our two Texas Legislators, Jerry Madden and Senator Florence Shapiro, will attend.
Coming Legislation, particularly the T.I.F., will be discussed in an informal setting. George Chrisman
was asked to talk about T.I.F He has been working with SMU to coordinate the Universities efforts to
get T.LF extended.

Recycle a Book Day will be held in November in the schools. Each child will bring two books and take
one new one home. The remaining books will be given to local agencies for use. Approximately 4000
books were given away last year.
Saturday, November 9, 2002, at the citywide Recycle a Book Day, Friends of the Allen Public Library
will be collecting books and magazines for resale in the library
The Arts Alliance and Friends of the Allen Public Library are revamping "Sunday Sounds." It will be
moved to an evening during the week and renamed.
7. Calendar.
• December 03, 2002, Allen Public Library Regular Board Meeting.
• December 08, 2002, Allen Christmas Parade.
• December 09, 2002, NETLS Meeting in Garland.
• December 12, 2002, Annual Board and Commission Banquet — Hilton Garden Inn, Allen.
• December 24-25, 2002 — Library Closed for Christmas Holiday.
• January 01, 2003 — Library Closed for New Years Day
Motion: Upon a motion made by Board member John Ross and a second by Board member George Chrisman,
the Board voted (7) for and none (0) opposed to adjourn the Board Meeting.
