Min - Library Board - 2000 - 04/04 - RegularI. The regular meeting of the Allen Public Library Board was called to order at 7:45 p.m. and a
quorum was announced by Chairperson, Donna Drews Vanous. Board members present were
John Ross, Marybeth Bonczek, Cal Calvin, Cindy Wynn -Sangster and Library Director, Barbara
Buehler.
II. Approved minutes of meetings of January 4, 2000 and March 14, 2000.
III. Reviewed monthly activity reports and suggestion box forms.
IV Discussed updated Media Relations Policy
- According to Kathryn Poteet, the City of Allen's Public Information Officer, the
only change made to the policy was the striking out of any reference to the words
"policy governance."
V. Reviewed the Service portion of the Master Plan for the library
Donna Drews Vanous expressed concern as to whether one item in the Master Plan could cause
the whole plan not to be approved.
Barbara Buehler said that the recommendations in the Master Plan would definitely affect
staffing and budgeting.
John Ross felt that there was nothing unexpected in the Master Plan and that it provided a good
idea of what should be looked at going into the future He also stated that we could build off the
goals in the plan to get a library done.
Marybeth Bonczek said that some of the recommendations in the Master Plan could be worked
on before the new library is built.
VI. John Ross made a motion for the Board to recommend the Master Plan to the City Council.
Cal Calvin seconded and the motion carried unanimously
John Ross believed that it would be a good idea for the Board to have a Joint planning meeting
with the Friends of the Library to go over goals and to ask for input and ideas on fund raising.
He also believed that meeting with the Friends regularly (every 6 months) could be beneficial.

Cal Clavin thought that ajoint meeting with the Friends was a good idea. He stated that they
had been very supportive and had worked diligently and somewhat silently. He further stated
that ajoint meeting with the Allen Arts Alliance would be beneficial, as well.
Donna Drews Vanous agreed and said that we could build relationships and capitalize on the
assets and strengths of the individuals in these groups
VII. Other Business — Barbara Buehler
Told us about a free class for parents called Outings and Adventures for Children
Ages I-5. It is being taught by Lynda T Morley and is being held at the library on
April 30, from 2:00 — 4:00 p.m
Told us about classes she attended at a recent conference.
Discussed gift bricks.
Reminded us of the luncheon given by the Volunteer Center of Collin County on
April 13, 2000.
VIII. The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
