Min - Library Board - 2000 - 06/06 - RegularMINUTES OF THE ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD June 6, 2000 �y ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY TWO ALLEN CIVIC PLAZA ALLEN, TEXAS 75013 I. The regular meeting of the Allen Public Library Board was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and a quorum was announced by Chairperson, Donna Drews Various. Board members present were John Ross, Cindy Wynn -Sangster, Cal Calvin, and Frank Snidow. Also present were Barbara Buehler, Library Director and Cindy Brannum, Secretary, Friends of the Library II. Reviewed Monthly Activity Reports. DI. The minutes of the May 2, 2000 meeting were approved as read. IV. Reviewed suggestion box forms. V. Reviewed preliminary Library budget. - Base budget increased 2% over last year. - New programs require approval. - Requested a 5% book budget increase due to 4B funding that the library received last year but will not receive in the coming year and due to volatility of county funding. - Increased spending for electronic resources. This goal was in the master plan for the library - Added a new media position. - Requested two position upgrades. - TIF grant matching. Barbara felt that the budget was well received by Peter Vargas. Frank asked if the budget had to be prioritized. Barbara stated that it did not. VI. Discussion of summer Reading Programs. Barbara said that the Summer Reading programs had been changed this year to be more age appropriate in order to pull in more older children. She further stated that this had caused more work for the staff but had been well received by patrons. VD. Discussed Bond Election brochure. John Ross felt that it would be best to let the City brochure be done in the same format as usual. The Allen Arts Alliance could put together another brochure for the Board to use. Cindy Wynn -Sangster was concerned that some of the wording in the borchure would be confusing to the public and should be changed. The Board concurred and Barbara Buehler agreed to get the changes made before it goes to print. Minutes of the Allen Public Library Board Junre 6, 2000 Page 2 VIII. Discussed possible candidates for the Political Action Committee (PAC) and its Treasurer. John Ross felt that an organizational meeting for the PAC was needed and that a Chairperson, Vice -Chairperson and Treasurer should be put in place. Cal Calvin suggested that David Kerr Chair the PAC and Steve Matthews be Vice -Chair. Donna Drews Vanous agreed to get an organizational meeting together. Barbara Buehler said that she had spoken to Bill Petty who has a list of representatives from homeowners associations. Donna Drews Vanous was concerned that all of the homeowners associations were on the West side. Frank Snidow, didn't believe that would be a concern. Cal Calvin said that several of the homeowners associations have websites that could be utilized. Barbara Buehler thought that someone from Leadership Allen should be on the PAC. Cal Calvin had talked with someone about possible candidates from Leadership Allen. Donna Drews Vanous felt that some of the Friends of the Library should be on the PAC Cindy Branum said some of the Friends of the Library were interested in being on the Pac. Barbara Buehler agreed to get the necessary forms to be filed for the PAC and bring them to the organizational meeting. Donna Drews Vanous asked if the Board could have an open house at the library John Ross thought that would be fine, but that it would be a good idea to run things like that by the City Attorney just to make sure we were staying within election code. IX. Other Business Tess McKeown of the Allen Arts Alliance (AAA) asked if the Library Board would be interested in doing the Sunday Sounds concerts again. The Board agreed to do these concerts again. Barbara Buehler was approached by Larry Lebling, a financial planner, who wanted to do a series of free financial seminars in the library meeting room. The Board agreed with the condition that Mr. Lebling not use these seminars as advertising for his business. Barbara agreed to contact the Parks and Recreation Department to ask about a similar seminar that was held at the Joe Farmer Recreation center. The Board agreed to meet on June 27, 2000 as the next meeting date was the July 4th holiday X.
