Min - Library Board - 2000 - 12/05 - RegularThe regular meeting of the Allen Public Library Board was called to order at 7:35 p.m. and a quorum was announced by Chairperson, Donna Drews Vanous. Board members present were John Ross, Ruth Pringle, Cal Calvin, Frank Snidow, Jo Long, and Marybeth Bonczek. Also present were Barbara Buehler, Library Director and Lisa Heingartner, of the Friends of the Library II. The minutes of the November 7, 2000 meeting were approved as mailed. III. Barbara reported that Mary Vail, Consultant, would present the Allen City Council at its Thursday, December 7, 2000 meeting with the plans for the acquiring of library property A revised statistical report was passed out and time was given to review it. Suggestion box forms were also read and discussed. IV. Next, plans for the December 13, 2000 legislative breakfast meeting were developed. Representative Madden and Allen Mayor Steve Terrell will attend. Florence Shapiro will not be available to attend. City Council members and the City Manager have also been invited. Friends of the Library will provide breakfast. A "Soft" agenda was agreed upon. The Mayor will say a few words and a resolution which will be passed at the December 7" City Council meeting which supports direct aid for public Libraries at the 2001 State Legislative Session will be presented to Representative Madden. This direct Library aid would begin as an exceptional item in the State budget. Lisa asked how the money would be divided if it was to be approved and become part of the State budget. Public Libraries should receive $10,000. Then the amount would vary by locale. The Allen Public Library staff has already brainstormed upon ideas for how this money would be spent. Barbara gave the board a "verbal compact" version of the handout we received at the November Board meeting. The Board also discussed having a prayer before breakfast. Cal asked if there is a precedent in the city regarding prayer at meetings such as the meeting to be held on the 13`h of December. A discussion followed as to pros and cons of having a prayer. Barbara said she would check with the city's secretary to see if there is a precedent to having a prayer. We all agreed that all faiths should be considered with sensitivity, when choosing the wording of a prayer. Ruth told the board that Mrs. Shapiro has a town hall meeting scheduled at SMU for Tuesday, December 12, 2000. In case anyone was planning to attend, it might provide an opportunity to bring up the Direct Aid for Public Libraries proposal John proposed that the Library board create its own resolution in support of the Library aid to send to the State representatives. This resolution would be sent out at a later date. V. Other business items: Barbara announced that there are some new library staff members: Brad Scott — Reference Librarian Gillian McNabb — Part-time Clerk Lisa and Barbara also announced that the Friends of the Library won the judge's award for their float at the city's Christmas Parade. VI. The next meeting will be January 9, 2001. VII. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. These minutes read and approved this 7th day of December, 2000.
