ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD

L The January 1998 Allen Public Library Board meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m by Board
Chairperson, Fritz Dietrich. Members present were Doone Various, Rhonda Grigg, Joe
Defenderfer, Frank Snidow, and Mary Vail -Grube. Also present were Library Director Barbara
Buehler, and the Friends of the Library representative Gloria LaRuvere.
II. The Board reviewed the minutes of the December 2, 1997 meeting. M. Vail -Grube moved to
approve the minutes. D Vanous seconded the motion. Motion passed.
III. Suggestions received by the Library were reviewed by the Board. All of the suggestions were
being addressed by Library staff The statistical report for December 1997 was reviewed by the
Board.
IV. B Buehler addressed the Board with highlights from the Northeast Texas Library System
meeting
V. G. LaRovere gave the Board an overview of upcoming events sponsored by the Friends of the
Library including a free Brass Quintet concert scheduled for January 18' and a Friends of the
Library Executive board meeting scheduled for January 12ih
VL At the request of B. Buehler, the Board participated in a brainstorming session regarding an
initiative to supply money for the Library Trust Fund on an ongoing basis Some of the ideas
discussed included the following: making the blue library book/donation forms more accessible, a
mystery night(s), a fun run, a golf tournament, outings with local professors acting as docents for
special interest themes, an espresso bar, and a readathon fund-raiser. B Buehler is in the process
of contacting other libraries for ideas about what has been successful at their locations The
Board will reconvene on the issue during the next regularly scheduled session.
VII, In other business, the Board was supplied with an updated Policies and Procedures page for their
binders. The February 5'" Board Business'98 workshop was announced. A NETLS meeting will
be held at Schemelpfenig Library on January 20
VIII. F Smilow moved to adjourn this session of the Library Board. D. Vanous seconded the motion
Motion carried. The Board adjourned at 9 00 p.m.
