Min - Library Board - 1999 - 04/06 - RegularMINUTES OF THE ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD APRIL 6, 1999 ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY TWO ALLEN CIVIC PLAZA ALLEN, TEXAS 75013 I. The regular meeting of the Allen Public Library Board was called to order at 7 40 p.m by Vice Chair John Ross. Members present included Mary Vail Grube, Joe Defenderfer, and Rhonda Grigg Donna Vanous, Frank Snidow and Dee Teel were absent Also present was Library Director Barbara Buehler II. Mr Defenderfer moved approval of the minutes as presented Ms Grigg seconded the motion and the minutes were approved unanimously M. The Board reviewed the monthly statistical report and the suggestion box forms There was no action required by the Board Member Defenderfer asked Director Buehler about the Internet Use Policy She explained the policy and stated that it is read to each person who comes in to use the Internet. IV. Vice Chair Ross and Director Buehler gave an update on the status of the CIP process and the library expansion as part of the CIP and proposed bond election. At the current time the library expansion will not be included in the CIP or bond package. The City Council has asked staff to conduct an analysis of current and future service and space requirements in light of current information about the future population size and demographics. There will be a survey of the community conducted to seek input on the site, service needs and facility requirements The Council will hire a consultant to develop recommendations based on the input of the community, the Library Board and the City Council and staff V. The Board reviewed the report on the Focus Group meetings that were held last winter regarding future service and facility needs It was agreed that this information would be useful in the process discussed in the previous item of business. Technology is seen as a critical issue in future library facilities and services VI. Director Buehler reported on a symposium she attended in Chicago, "How to Build the Perfect Library " She said she obtained a lot of useful information to help us with the process and resources for consultants and architects who specialize in this area. Ms Buehler then gave the Board an update on the plans for National Library Week, April 11 — 17, 1999 The Mayor has signed a Proclamation There will be a Book Fair, the Friends of the Library are sponsoring a presentation by the Romance Writers organization, and there will be guest readers from the community for Children's Department Programs. VIII. In Other Business, Ms Buehler reported that we received the Texas Council of Humanities grant to do an exhibit regarding the historical impact of rail service in Allen and to have a historian in this field make a presentation on the topic Itis expected to take place this Fall Ms Grigg said she thought it would be nice to think about an exhibit regarding the Millennium Ms Buehler reported that Mr Snidow will attend the Texas Library Association meeting in Dallas in April with her IX.
