ROUNTREE, Supt. ALLEN TEXAS, 75002 August 18, 1967 City of Allen Allen, Texas Dear Sir: The Allen School seeks permission to set a fence six feet from the curb on the east side of the elementary school ground. The school board will move the fence at the request of the city of Allen anytime it might interfere with the function of the city. Sincerely your ALLEN SCHOOL BOARD EUGENE MCDERMOTT 13500 NORTH CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY P O BOX 5474 DALLAS,TEXAS 75222 August 10, 1967 The Honorable Mayor and City Council Allen, Texas Chief, Fire Department Allen, Texas Gentlemen With the approval of the community of Allen, as outlined in this letter the McDermott Foundation would be deeply pleased to make a contribution to the community, and the purpose of this letter is to outline suggestions which appear appropriate to us for handling the gift. It appears that a fire station-community center, with particular emphasis on its being a beauty spot, would be a fine additional asset for the community and its people, and the McDermott Foundation would like to acquire a site and provide funds for the completion of such a facility As you know, we have initiated some investigation of this possibility, and the site which seems most appropriate belongs to and is available from the First Methodist Church of Allen, but before completing its acquisition and proceeding with the planning and construction of such a facility our primary concern would be to have complete assurance that such a gift meets with the approval of Allen citizens Also, we want to provide an outstanding installation, and we would want assurance that it would be maintained in splendid condition. The McDermott Foundation would want to choose the architect for the facility and to work with an Advisory Committee of Allen citizens in the planning and development of it. We would suggest the following as representatives The Mayor of Allen - Mr. Gentry T Jones City Councilman - Mr Roy Enon - Ewen The Chief of the Fire Department - Mr. Eugene Lamb One additional representative of the Department - Mr. J. L. Dement Mr. W. E. Ford The Honorable Mayor and City Council Chief, Fire Department -2- August 10, 1967 The desire of the Trustees in making this gift would be to provide with the fire station portion of the facility added safety for the community and with the community center portion of the facility convenience and pleasure for Allen citizens. It seems to us the Fire Department or its assigned delegate should be in charge of scheduling functions in the center, and any fees for its use should be minimal to cover cleaning, breakage, etc In order to make firm our pledge commitment for this, we would be grateful to receive letters from the following advising us if the facility is desired and if the suggestions covered by this letter are acceptable The Mayor and City Council of Allen The Fire Department Chief as a representative of the Fire Department Residents around the proposed location of the fire station - community center With cordial best wishes. The McDermott Foundation Trustees Eugene McDermott (Mrs) Eugene McDermott J.E. Jonsson Dear Mr. & Mrs. McDermott: Your letter of August 10, 1967, addressed to myself and the City Council of Allen, Texas, was received with a great deal of pleasure. The word "Thanks" cannot express our deep appreciation for what you are doing for our community.
