ALLEN CITY COUNCIL
SPECIAL CALLED JOINT MEETING
JULY 20, 19% PAGE 2
The group participated in a team -budding exercise as developed by Facilitator Linda Gardner. The agenda
for the day was reviewed to include: rock game, meeting agreements, introductions, create a vision, identify and
prioritize actions, and final wrap-up.
The meeting agreements included the following issues:
One speaker at a time
Respond to speaker's comments before moving on
Stay on task
Constructive disagreement is positive, not personal
There are no bad ideas
Make sure comments are moving task forward
Everyone is responsible for keeping on track
Focus on a win-win outcome
John Sprague (Chamber) informed the group that the Chamber recently reviewed their customer base.
They were not sure what the important goals were for the other entities of the city, however. They felt it was
important to see what they were before the Chamber could decide on their new priorities. This is a very positive
opportunity for Allen.
Barbara Erwin (School) indicated that we have an incredible opportunity as a committee—it comes only
once in a lifetime. We are now at an incubation stage and what this body decides to do is a legacy for the future.
We have a blank page in front of us We cannot look back at what we did, we will only get where we have always
gotten. We, in this room, have all the puzzle pieces in front of us for an opportunity of a lifetime.
Jon McCarty (City) stressed the importance of developing a vision for the community Then each entity
can contribute to that vision.
The objectives for the meeting include the following:
To create a vision for the community of Allen, Texas
To encourage creative collaboration between the three city entities (and other groups)
Chamber of Commerce
City Government
School District
The community of Allen does not just want to make it into the playoffs, the community wants the
championship ring.
Qualities of a vision were discussed and include the following:
Statement of purpose, direction and excellence
Reflects your identity and pride—be distinctive
It's a stretch
■^ What's the outcometbenefit for the citizens
LThe group did individual visioning and shared with each other. After a workable vision was created, it
was decided that it be sent to a subgroup for final refinement. The subgroup members include John Sprague,
