PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD MEETING
AUGUST 17, 1993
H.
Prior to inviting citizen comments, Rhoda presented a brief background on the
public input process, telling them that 157 questionnaires has been mailed or
handed out up to this time, requesting citizens of Allen to respond with
information on what they would like to see at the Allen Recreation Center.
Steve Mayberry, a teacher for the past 10 years at Allen High School,
indicated that he would like to see a gym. In the past, he has used the school
facilities, but feels that often there are conflicts between the programming
(doors being unlocked, etc). He felt the Recreation Center should offer
programming for teenagers on certain evenings.
Larry Wells representing the Lucas Lopers (square dance club of Collin
County) requested space be provided for dances, and dance lessons could be
held. He would like to be able to reserve the center on a bi-weekly basis for
their needs. He also indicated that attention should be paid to the type of
flooring installed that would be receptive to dancing. He indicated that a coat
room, kitchen area and possibly even storage area he made available for
groups using the facility.
Mickey Christakos indicated that some funding might be made available from
the Clark Stevens Memorial Fund that Mike Williams has been custodian of
for the past several years.
It was suggested that a student advisory board be developed with students that
represent several different areas of interest to help develop programming and
rule making where the teen activities were concerned.
Ross Obermeyer reminded everyone that he had 2,000 questionnaires from
high school and middle school students indicating their preferences regarding a
teen center. The survey was administered by the Community Education Office
and he felt the information contained therein would be very helpful to the
current effort.
Sally Terrell indicated that the private franchise offering "Saturday Night
Live" and "Friday Night Live" in McKinney and Plano is seeing great success
and high attendance numbers from the "under 14" age group. She indicated it
would be a good idea for the City of Allen to consider a similar program for
the new recreation center.

Having programming a recreation center for several years, Ray Galloway
offered that in his experience, the more structured a teen program was, the
less well attended it became.
Mickey Christakos also mentioned that the Allen Senior Citizens were looking
forward to having some programming at the Center as well as the other groups
in town.
Rhoda informed everyone that there were actually two facilities to be
completed during this process - a recreation center (budgeted at $1.2 million),
and a primary facility at Bethany Lakes Park (budgeted at $188,000).
III. DISTRIBUTE AND COLLECT OUESTIONNAIRES REGARDING THE
DESIGN OF THE ALLEN RECREATION CENTER
Five questionnaires were handed out, and four were turned in at the end of the
meeting.
IV. ADJOURN
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m.
