KEEP ALLEN BEAUTIFUL BOARD
REGULAR MEETING

Call to order and announce a quorum is present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy
Gonzales at 6:33 p m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall,
305 Century Parkway, Allen. TX.
I Approve minutes of November 17 meeting
MOTION: Mandy Brown made a motion to approve the meeting minutes for November 17 as
presented The motion was seconded by John Ognzovich and carried with all in favor.
2. Update from Parks Dept on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
The Parks Department picked up three hundred trees which have been maintained at the tree
farm awaiting delivery in the Trees for Allen program. More than 50,000 lbs. of brush was
removed during greenbelt maintenance. Parks is assisting a local Girl Scout with a nature trail
project.
3. Receive undate on KAB Events and Projects
a. National Arbor Day Poster Contest — AAR
Fourteen entries from three schools were received. The first, second, and third place
winners will be presented at a City Council meeting. A tree will be planted in honor of the
first place winner
b. C WD Cart Audit update
The cart audit is still in progress Addresses with unpaid carts will be notified ria mail.
c Rotary Holiday Parade — AAR
In spite of the weather, there was a good turnout for this event.

Boards and Commissions Dinner — AAR
This evening featured good food and local entertainment Attendees had an opportunity to
interact with members of other local boards.

Trees for Allen — sale: January through mid-February
One hundred trees sold so far. The sale ends February 12.

KTB Individual Awards — due February 26 (City Hall by Feb 17 )
Nominations and accompanying supplemental materials were discussed.
g.
KAB & C WD Annual Report to Council — February 23
The annual report is the same night as the Arbor Day Poster Contest winners will be
presented to Council. A KAB member will give this report
h.
Sustainable Landscape Seminar Series — February through June
This series is put on by the Water Conservation Division, sponsored by KAB. It is a series
of eight seminars - $5.00 each or $30.00 for the whole series.

Arbor Day — March 7
Trees will be planted in Story Park. KAB will buy the shirts. This event will feature a d.j.,
flag ceremony, and crafts. Arbor Day Poster Contest winners will be presented at this
event also.

Litter Index — March to May
Volunteers from KAB are needed for this event. They will watch a training video, then
travel around the city, assigning ratings to various areas. This is a requirement as a Keep
America Beautiful Affiliate.

Seeding a Healthy Community (Watters Creek) —April 10

It is unclear at this time if this event will be held as it was the previous year.

Live Green Expo — April 17
This is an event in Plano at which KAB will have a booth. Plano has expressed interest in
holding a zero waste event.

Great American Cleanup — April 24
This city-wide cleanup event will be held on Bossy Boots as in veins past.

KTB Youth Awards — due May I 1 (City Hall by April 30)
These awards are similar to KTB Individual Awards. Nominations were discussed.

Reuse -a -Shoe Contest — April (KAB to present awards end of May)
This contest is in April. The Shoe Bank takes the donated used athletic shoes and donates
them where there is a need. Schools and classes compete to collect the most shoes.

KTB Conference (Austin) — June 21-24
Each board member may attend. This conference offers Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep
America Beautiful training The conference schedule will be on the KTB website.

USA Celebration — June 26
Setting up the recvcle containers before the event worked well last year. There was good
cooperation with the Parks Department for a zero waste event. KAB will have a booth
again.

Electronics Collection — August
The next electronics collection independent of a larger event is scheduled for August.

Educator Expo — September
A request has been submitted to reserve the same space for this event as last year.

"Come Home for the Harvest' festival ( Village at Allen) — September

The Village at Allen would like for KAB to participate in a fall festival Possible activities
for the festival were discussed. The Village is starting a community garden.
4. Receive Financial Report/Budget Updatc
Donna Kliewer reported $17,484.13 in the City fund. The American National Bank of Texas
account statement was unavailable at the time of the meeting.
5. Receive reports from Strategic Planning initiatives
a. Communication
A Nurtured World has been put on hold for the time being Kerry will send the next
quarter's tips to be included in the City e -newsletter to Amanda. Daily environmental tips
and Twitter.com posts continue
b. Environmental Center
There is nothing to report at this time.

d. Parks and Recreation Liaison
Mardy will attend the next meeting Beverly will send an email regarding the upcoming
Allen USA Celebration.
