Approve Minutes of November 16, 2010 Meeting MOTION: John Ogrizovich made a motion to approve the meeting minutes for November 16 as presented. The motion was seconded by Stacy Gonzales and carried with all in favor 2. Update from Parks Dept. on Horticulture and Environmental Programs Amanda Mattle relayed information about the Arbor Day Celebration and the Arbor Day Poster Contest from Denise Moore. Howard Garrett will do a live broadcast and speak in the library after the event is over at noon. Those interested in having a booth at the Arbor Day Celebration to convey free, tree -related information should contact Denise Moore. Fourth-grade and fifth -grade students were included in this year's Arbor Day Poster Contest. First -place entries from each grade will go on to the statewide contest. 3. Discuss Distribution of KAB Reusable Bags Various options to distribute the new reusable bags in Allen were discussed. S. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects a. Rotary Holiday Parade —AAR This was a fun event where the Recycled Art Contest winners walked with KAB. Scouts carried banners with litter -free messages b Boards and Commissions Dinner —AAR The board briefly discussed the event which recognizes the efforts over the past year of various boards and commissions. c Receive Walmart Grant at VIP Grand Goering — January 23 Walmart will present grants at this event, which will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m, and have requested that KAB attend to accept their check. Allen USA — June 25 This Parks & Recreation Department event is usually held at Celebration Park KAB works with Parks to make this a zero -waste event. o. Electronics Collection —August6 This will be the third quarterly electronics collection for the year, usually held at City Hall. p Allen Recvcles Day—November 5 Part of Texas Recycles Day and America Recycles Day, this event usually hosts an electronics collection, document shredding, various donation opportunities, potted pansies delivered to seniors, and cleanups throughout he city Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Amanda Mattle reported $21,174 95 in the American National Bank account. The City KAB Account balance was not available 6. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives a. Communication KAB's Twitter account is up to 515 followers and posts are often retweeted by Keep Texas Beautiful and Allen City Limits. b. Environmental Center Nothing new to report. c. Environmental Education in AISD d. Walmart Grand Opening — January 26 This event is open to the community and will be from 8'00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The board discussed attending this event. e. Arbor Day Poster Contest— Due January 28 at City Hall The contest is open to fourth- and fifth -graders this year and is no longer sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The board discussed the contest and criteria on which posters will bejudged f Trees for Allen — Sale: January through February l l Allen residents can purchase trees to have delivered for planting, or they may donate them for the City to plant. Order forms went out in December's water utility bills g. Sustainable Landscape Series — January through May The series will begin at the end of January Eight classes on various landscape topics are scheduled at $5 00 per class. h. KAB Report to Council — February 22 Mardy Brown is scheduled to give KAB's annual report to Council. Arbor Day Poster Contest winners will also be recognized at this meeting. i. KTB Awards — February 25 (due to City Hall February 1 1) Nominees and application progress were discussed. J. Arbor Day — March 5 This event will be held at the library Some trees will be available for volunteer groups to plant. k. Eggcellent Family Adventure —April 16 This is a Parks Department event that was well -attended last year. Participation in this event was discussed. I. Great American Cleanup This event will be held at Bossy Boots as in years past. The day's events and participants were discussed. in.
