COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM 305 CENTURY PARKWAY ALLEN, TX 75013 Presen Stacy Gonzalez Mardy Brown Michelle Ross Mark Schallhorn Beverly Pruitt Absent Kelley Bayne Kerry Craven Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Waste Services Manager Jesse Simmons, City Forester Casey Bennett, Education Specialist Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy Gonzales at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX. 1. CORE Presentation (Olson Elementary) on Current Environmental Project A presentation of the current status of the vegetation planted by seven Olson students (using the Healthy Habitat grant funds) last year was given to all Board members and guests. Kirk Evans, science teacher at Olson, led the students in an interactive presentation where the students taught all participants how to sketch plants and create a sound map. 2. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs Jesse Simmons reported on the mulching of medians and flower beds as a drought measure. Soapberry trees are being killed by a special type of beetle that is proliferating Allen, but as these trees are dying, they are being replaced by new, native trees (such as the Live Oak). 3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Donna Kliewer reported $16,151.29 unencumbered in the City account; $13,310.70 in the American National Bank account. 4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects • Arbor Day Poster Contest— February 28 @ City Council 4 of 6 winners have responded that they will attend. Mark and Stacy will attend this meeting. • Annual KAB Report to Council— February 28 Stacy will be presenting the report • KTB Awards o GCAA was submitted on-time and is available for viewing. o Atlas Copco application was submitted by Casey Bennett on February 17 o Kyle Webre's application has been completed and will be submitted in May. o A possible third nominee is Olson Elementary Environmental Club. Stacy Gonzales volunteered to write this application. We qualify for KTB Gold Star Affiliate status with the GCAA and two additional submissions. • Arbor Day Date for Arbor Day is still TBD. Jesse Simmons, City Forester, indicated that November is still being considered for Arbor Day. The Trees for Allen tree program may be held in conjunction with Arbor Day. • Egg-cellent Family Adventure, March 31, 30-12 Beverly, Marcy, Mark and Michelle will support this event. • Twin Creeks Village Think Green Event — March 31, 1-4 Stacy and Beverly have tentatively agreed to support this event. • Earthfest 2012 Beverly and her daughter, Caroline, will be there to support the event. Casey is working on finding additional volunteers. • Great American Cleanup Allen Police Department will participate again this year by having the DEA Drug Take -back Collection on the same day as the GAC; time will differ as APD will participate from 30-2. Shredding, cardboard collection, and drug take -back will be at City Hall. Bossy Boots Circle will be the site of the core GAC. • Allen Recycles Day Will be held on November 3`a, 2012 at City Hall. 5. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives a) Communication Kerry: Daily Green Tips are being sent every day. Twitter and Facebook are occurring daily and weekly, respectively. b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm Molson Farms was featured on Channel 8 news as a public/private partnership as they consider opening community garden plots to be rented by citizens for gardening and composting. c) Environmental Education in AISD Stacy: EE is still on-going in schools. Donna met with the Alliance for a Healthier Allen (AHA). They are working with schools on the Motivate to Move campaign and the Live Healthy North Texas program. d) Parks and Recreation Liaison Beverly: working with Kelley to attend Parks & Recreation meetings. USA Celebration will be from 4 —11 at Celebration Park again this year. KAB and CWD will support the Zero Waste component of the event. e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison Mardy: Kyle Webre's KTB award application is now complete. Girl Scouts are working on bio -degradable eggs filled with wildflower seed to be used in egg hunts during Earthfest.
