Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Mark
Schallhorn at 6'30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in the Large Engineering Conference Room at City Hall,
305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX.
1. Approve Minutes of November 20, 2013 Meeting
A motion to approve November 20 minutes was made by Marcy Brown; seconded by Susan Ponder with all
in favor
2. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
Casey Bennett reported on the status of the cleanup activities throughout the city after the winter storms in
November/December 2013 KAB will be working with Parks staff again in March to host a special "Trees for
Allen" sale. Lastly, vandalism occurred at Boon's E -Lab Trail where trees were planted by KAB this past
November. Eighteen trees were uprooted and thrown into the creek.
3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Casey Bennett reported $19,602.18 unencumbered in the City account; $26,544.80 in the American National
Bank account. A large deposit was made after the Trees for Allen sale. A $1,000 WalMart Community
Giving grant was received and deposited in January. This deposit will be reflected on next month's financial
report.
4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects
• Kids Helping Kids Book Drive— February 1 through February 14
This initiative will be sent to the schools as a service opportunity for clubs and classes to donate new
and used children's books to be used for a new library to be built in Montego Bay, Jamaica. KAB is
partnering with AISD, the Friends of the Allen Public Library and the Universal Learning Centre for
this service opportunity.
• Arbor Day Poster Contest Presentation/KAB Annual Report — Feb 25 @ City Council
KAB Chair Mark Schallhorn will be in attendance delivering the presentation.

Keep America Beautiful Litter Index — March 19
Board Member Mardy Brown volunteered to support this event.
•
Reuse -a -Shoe Contest @ AISD— March 31 to April 18
E-mails will be sent to the district via Tim Carroll's office and the PTA Environmental Chairs.
•
Earthfest 2014—Aprils
Location for EarthFest is still being finalized. An announcement with the location information is
pending.
•
2012-2013 Waste Works Award Report Due — April 11
In total, AISD has 15 schools currently receiving Waste Works Awards.
•
Eggcellent Family Adventure — April 12
KAB will support this Parks & Recreation Department event with an educational booth.
•
DEA Drug Collection — April 26
This collection is sponsored by the Allen Police Department and will be located at Lowery Freshman
Center
•
Great American Cleanup — May 3
The two locations for the event are Allen City Hall & Bossy Boots Drive.

2013-2014 Waste Works Applications Due — May 16
Applications for the next school year are due at the end of this semester
•
Allen USA—June 2014 TBD
This event typically occurs on the last Saturday of lune. Tentative date is set for June 28.
•
Educator Expo—September 30
Discussion amongst the group occurred regarding exhibitors. For this year's event, the board
decided to invite other exhibitors that are "for profit" educators. A list of new invitees will be

drafted in the coming months.
Recycled Art Contest—October 1 through October 29
This contest occurs in select AISD schools based on which teachers want to participate. It is a K-12
contest.

Arbor Day—October 25
KAB will support this Parks & Recreation Department event with an education booth and sell trees
through the Trees for Allen program.

Allen Recycles Day/Recycled Art Contest Awards Presentation — November 8
The event will occur at City Hall again this year
•
Rotary Christmas Parade— December 2014 TBD
The parade is typically the first Sunday of December
5. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives
a)
Communication—Kimberly
Twitter updates are occurring on a regular basis.
b)
Environmental Center/Molson Farm —Mardy
There are no updates at this time.
c)
Environmental Education in AISD — Kelly
Kelly McDonald expressed a desire to send an information supplement to the Walk & Bike to School
programs through AHA to promote the environmental benefits to these programs.
d)
Parks and Recreation Liaison — Cheryl
Next Parks board meeting is in February.
e)
Scout/Service Organization Liaison — Susan
Information is being sent to scout service units about volunteering with KAB. Casey will be doing a
presentation with the Eagle Trail Cub Scout Roundtable on February 9t'
