Call to Order
(Agenda Item I)
With a quorum of the Board present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Special Called Workshop meeting
was called to order at 7:04 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 1998, in the Conference Room of Allen City
Hall, One Butler Circle.
Request to Appear By Tim Dentler, Parks and Rec. (Agenda Item II)
Tim Dentler, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation and Bobby Trevino, Operation Supervisor
made a presentation about the six (6) parks that will be involved in the theme of "Traveling Texas"
Each park will represent a geographic area of Texas and the historic or natural wonders indicative to that
area. Each park will provide to residents a restful oasis from their hectic everyday lives and it will also
offer a mini -tour of another Texas community Signs will inform visitors of the place they are seeing
and landscaping will provide visual cues.
The opportunities these parks will present will not only be a recreational destination but also an
educational destination—for schools, camp groups or private organization and will put Allen in the
forefront of urban park planning. The parks will follow the themes listed below,
1. Hillside Park - "Dinosaurs in Texas"
2. Rolling Hills Park - "East Texas Piney Woods"
3. Reed Park - "Hill Country"
4. Green Park - "West Texas"
5. Shadow Lakes Park - "Red River"
6. Heritage Park - "Big Bend"
Tim and Bobby showed us drawings of each park and explained why certain park areas were
selected to represent the above sections of Texas The Parks Department is very receptive to the Adopt -
a -Park program that the Keep Allen Beautiful Board is interested in sponsoring. They mentioned they
have obtained information on the Adopt a Spot programs from Tulsa, OK ( who is also involved in a
program called "Up With Trees") and a city in Arizona. They discussed with the Board that these
programs thrive with funding from sponsors within these cities. Tim said that they will be very happy to
come back to the Board in a few months and give us an update on how the parks are progressing.

Tun was asked by the Board about doing some median improvements. He told the Board that
Median Standards have not been fully developed and that he will have to obtain more information about
what the standards will be and how the Board can be involved. The same will have to be done on
Facility and Park Standards as each park is designed to have color programs, trees and printing plans
and shrubbery planning.
Tim gave the Board an update on the trees from the National Tree Trust, they will soon be
moved from two (2) gallon to five (5) gallon buckets and will be moved to an area on west Bethany Dr.
Once they are moved and irrigation is in the Park Department will need volunteers to help water and
care for the trees.
