Call to order and announce a quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Kerry Craven at
6:38 p.m on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway,
Allen, TX,
1. Approve minutes of February 17 and July 21 meetings
MOTION: Stacy Gonzales made a motion to approve the February 17 and July 21 meeting minutes as
they stand The motion was seconded by David Buchanan and carried yvnh all in favor
2. Update from Parks Dept. on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
A printed update was included with pictures in the meeting packet. Members looked it over and briefly
discussed the removal of the large pecan tree in Glendower Park and Eagle Scout projects.
3. Receive update on KAB Events and Projects
a Cyclone Electronics Collection at City Hall —AAR
Only 469 Ib. of the almost 23,000 lbs collected went to landfill. 210 cars came through City Hall
for the event.
b Lducator Expo -September 17
Members looked over and discussed the Educator Expo booklet, donations already received for
the Expo, and places to approach for further donations.
c. Recvcled An Contest—October
This event isjust before Allen Recycles Day It is open to grades K— 12, set up in City Hall, and
judged by the public. Winners walk with Keep Allen Beautiful and Contmumty Waste Disposal
in the holiday parade
d Allen Recycles Day—November 7
The document shredding service for this event has been changed from Brink's to First -Shred;
shredding will take place from 8 a in. to I p.m, or until the trucks are full. Volunteers will be
needed Other participating organizations include Allen Community Outreach, Allen Animal
Shelter, Friends of the Library, The Shoe Bank, and Cyclone Aluminum and Steel. Walmart has
offered to donate snacks.
e. National Arbor Dav Poster Contest — November
The deadline for this contest is in November because entriesjudged at state and national levels
need to be mailed to meet their deadlines. Winners w ill be presented March 6th at the Arbor Day
Celebration. Education is available to schools about how to put together a good poster The
contest is for 5"' grade students only
f Rotary Holiday Parade — December 6
This event is on a Sundav, but the time is unknown right now The Arbor Day poster contest
winners walk with the Keep Allen Beautiful board and CWD's recycling truck. KAB will give
out reusable bags and t -shirts. Community Waste Disposal has offered the use of their Green
Event gator.

We are already getting calls about this, but have not chosen a park yet
h. Arbor Dav — March 7
i. Seeding a Healthv Community — April 10, 2010
We have set the date, but haven't set the location We are considering the Village and Watters
Creek and w ill meet with them during the next few weeks.
1. ANurtured World—TBD
We are still waiting on more mformation regarding rescheduling this event.
4. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Donna Kliewer reported that Keep Allen Beautiful has $30,224.74 in the American National Bank of
Texas account and $244.73 in the Solid Waste Services Fund
5. Receive reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives
a Communication
Kerry has done environmental tips for the newsletter through January and will send them to
Amanda to get artwork for them. Amanda has been posting almost daily on Twitter about Keep
Allen Beautiful activities. There were 58 attendees at the Urban Wddli fe seminar on July 16
Kathy Keller-Mielke and Amanda Mattle represented Keep Allen Beautiful at the Teen Volunteer
Job Fair on July 28 at the library
b. Environmental Center
The Environmental Center should be included in the Parks and Recreation master plan.
c. Environmental Education in AISD
Stacy still hasn't received communication from Mr. Vroonland's replacement.
MOTION: David made a motion to get a going -away gift of up to $100 for Pat Buckley;
motion was seconded by Stacy and passed unanimously.
d. Parks and Recreation Liaison
Allen is transitioning the Youth Center to a Visitor Center The City has hired a Tourism
Manager. The golf course is doing well and could break 50,000 rounds in a year. We discussed
the Parks master plan, which is a ten-year plan, about which Keep Allen Beautiful has 45 minutes
on August 25 at 11. 15 to give input Kelly McGinnis is writing a grant to put recycling in Allen
Station and Celebration Parks, a city-wide survey will be mailed to canvass responses.

6. Discuss submission of next rear's KTB awards (due in February and April)
We will brainstorm at the next meeting about nominations.
