HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - Keep Allen Beautiful Board - 2014 - 02/18 - RegularMINUTES Present Stacy Gonzales Mandy Brown Mark Schallhorn Susan Ponder Kelly McDonald Cheryl Baez Absent Kimberly Holton Staff Present Joey Herald, Councilmember Casey Bennett, Education Specialist Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Mark Schallhorn at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX. 1. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs Casey Bennett reported on behalf of Jesse Simmons, Urban Forester The Forestry Division and contract workers have been working on the wooded area at Celebration Park where there was an egret problem last year All of the underbrush has been removed as well as several hundred of the smaller trees. The goal is to thin out the area to make it less inviting for the egrets to return. Also, artificial turf at Allen Station Park softball field is on schedule to be completed by March 15. 2. Approve Minutes of January 21, 2014 Meeting A motion to approve January 21 minutes was made by Kelly McDonald; seconded by Mardy Brown, with all in favor 3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Casey Bennett reported $20,593.18 unencumbered in the City account; $25,625.43 in the American National Bank account. A $1,000 WalMart Community Giving grant was received and deposited in January. A motion to approve the financials was made by Mardy Brown; seconded by Kelly McDonald, with all in favor. 4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects • Kids Helping Kids Book Drive — February 1 through February 14—After Action Report Fifteen organizations are participating in the book drive So far 14 of them have submitted donations. A grand total of 4,629 books were submitted with the last group to submit their donations in early March. KAB is partnering with AISD, the Friends of the Allen Public Library & the Universal Learning Centre for the book drive. • Arbor Day Poster Contest Presentation/KAB Annual Report — Feb 25 @ City Council This presentation will detail the results of the 2013 KAB programs, events and contests. KAB is partnering with AISD, the Friends of the Allen Public Library & the Universal Learning Centre for the book drive. • Arbor Day Poster Contest Presentation/KAB Annual Report — Feb 25 @ City Council This presentation will detail the results of the 2013 KAB programs, events and contests. • Keep America Beautiful Litter Index— March 19 Nine seniors from the Allen Senior Recreation Center have volunteered to support the Litter Index this year. • Reuse -a -Shoe Contest @ AISD — March 31 to April 18 Winners of the contest will be recognized at City Council after the conclusion of the contest. • Earthfest 2014—Aprils Earthfest will be located at the Connemara Conservancy again this year Flyers in March Utility Bills. • 2013-2014 Waste Works Award Report Due — April 11 In total, AISD has 15 schools currently receiving Waste Works Awards. • Eggcellent Family Adventure — April 12 KAB is signed up to have an educational booth at this event. • DEA Drug Collection —April 26 This collection is sponsored by the Allen Police Department and will be located at Lowery Freshman Center. • Great American Cleanup — May 3 The two locations for the event are Allen City Hall & new location @ Commerce Parkway, north of the outlets. • 2014-2015 Waste Works Applications Due — May 16 Applications for the next school year are due at the end of this semester. • KTB Conference — June 23-25 (Austin) Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference has incredible learning opportunities for board members and staff. • Allen USA—June 28 KAB is already planning to have an educational booth with multiple volunteers patrolling the food court for litter and to help participants of the event with their recycling/compost questions. • Educator Expo—September 30 For this year's event, the board decided to invite other exhibitors that are "for profit' educators. A list of new invitees will be drafted in the coming months. The Perot Museum has confirmed their attendance at the event. • Recycled Art Contest— October 1 through October 29 This contest occurs in select AISD schools based on which teachers want to participate. It is a K-12 contest. • Arbor Day—October 25 KAB will support this Parks & Recreation Department event with an education booth and sell trees through the Trees for Allen program. • Allen Recycles Day/Recycled Art Contest Awards Presentation — November 8 The event will occur at City Hall again this year 5. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives a) Communication — Kimberly Twitter updates are occurring on a regular basis. b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm — Mandy There are no updates at this time. c) Environmental Education in AISD— Kelly Kelly McDonald shared about the Kids Helping Kids Book Drive in select schools throughout AISD. Green Elementary collected the most books with 1125. Anderson was second with 690. d) Parks and Recreation Liaison — Cheryl Meeting was held at the Allen Event Center Presentation was about current state of parks facilities, etc. Parks Department is going to recycle the old turf & clay at Allen Station Park to use at other parks in the future. e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison—Susan Presentation at the Eagle Trail Cub Scout Roundtable on February 9" was a success. Casey met with 20+ scout leaders to discuss the benefits of partnering with KAB for its programs, events and initiatives. Some of the packs had already participated with KAB and shared their experiences. Others wanted to get involved based on the presentation.
