Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Mark
Schallhorn at 634 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305
1 Century Parkway, Allen, TX.
1. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
Jesse Simmons, Urban Forester, reported that 32 trees purchased through the Trees for Allen program will
be planted at the Dayspring Nature Preserve and Dayspring Park. The Forestry Division will be phasing out
annuals in favor of perennials in order to minimize maintenance. The tree farm at Molson Farm will accept
160+ trees through mitigation efforts at new subdivisions in Allen. Lastly, artificial turf at Allen Station Park
softball field is now complete.
2. Approve Minutes of February 18, 2014 Meeting
A motion to approve February 18 minutes was made by Kelly McDonald; seconded by Cheryl Baez, with all in
favor
3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Donna Kliewer reported $16,699.38 unencumbered in the City account; $21,852.48 in the American
National Bank account A motion to approve the financials was made by Mardy Brown; seconded by Stacy
Gonzales, with all in favor.
4. Receive Update on NAB Events and Projects
• Kids Helping Kids Book Drive -February 1 through February 14 -Final Report
A grand total of 16 organizations donated books to the book drive, with a surprise being Olson
Elementary. All told, over 5,000 books were collected. Of the books donated, approximately 3,500
will go to the Farm Primary &Junior High School in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Additional books will be
routed to the Robin's Nest, an orphanage/pre-school daycare facility in Montego Bay, as well as
another library in Belize that needs -1,000 books. The Universal Learning Centre will be delivering
the books in May 2014.
Keep America Beautiful Litter Index - March 19 - After Action Report
Nine seniors from the Allen Senior Recreation Center supported the Litter Index along with Mardy
Brown and Casey Bennett. In 2013, Allen's score was 1.68, and lowered to 1.64 in 2014.

• Reuse -a -Shoe Contest @ AISD-March 31 to April 18- Update
Fourteen AISD schools are participating, including Rountree and Lindsey Elementary for the first
time.
• Earthfest 2014 -Aprils -After Action Report
KAB Board Members Kimberly Holton (and her children), Stacy Gonzales, Mark Schallhorn and
Cheryl Baez, along with Staff Members Kathy Keller-Mielke, Donna Kliewer, Andrea Smith and Casey
Bennett educated participants at the event. Of the 538 participants at Earthfest, 451 were educated
at the KAB table, while 175 were educated at the Water Conservation booth and 150 educated using
the Stream Trailer
• Eggcellent Family Adventure - April 12- After Action Report
KAB Board Members Kelly McDonald (and youngest son Will), Mardy Brown and Susan Ponder (with
her son Paul) joined Casey Bennett in educating 635 participants at the event. Additionally, Kelly set
up an egg collection station for empty plastic eggs and was able to collect -1,500+ eggs in Just ever
three hours. Eggs collected at the event will be re -distributed to a non-profit for special needs
children in McKinney.
• DEA Drug Collection - April 26
This collection will be located at Lowery Freshman Center from 30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Great American Cleanup - May 3
The two locations for the event are Allen City Hall & new location @ Commerce Parkway, north of
the outlet mall. All board members received their assignment for the day and an orientation of the
event
• 2014-2015 Waste Works Applications Due- May 16
Reports for the current school year have been submitted by all participating schools. So far, the
applications for the next school year have not yet been sent out. Even still, three applications have
already been received.

KTB Conference -June 23-25 (Austin)
Three KAB Board Members and three staff are currently slated to attend this year's conference.
• Allen USA -June 28
KAB is already planning to have an educational booth with multiple volunteers patrolling the food
court for litter and to help participants of the event with their recycling/compost questions.
• Educator Expo -September 30
Included in the list of new exhibitors attend the event at the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, the
Heard Museum, In -Sync Exotics, Jon Bunker Sands Wetlands and the Perot Museum. Departments
are currently submitting updates to their submissions for the Expo Booklet.
• Recycled Art Contest- October 1 through October 29
This contest occurs in select AISD schools based on which teachers want to participate. It is a K-12
contest.
• Arbor Day -October 25
The Parks & Recreation Department is still in the process of selecting the location for this year's
event.
• Allen Recycles Day/Recycled Art Contest Awards Presentation - November 8
There is no update at this time.
• Rotary Holiday Parade - December 6
There is no update at this time.

a) Communication
Twitter updates are occurring on a regular basis.
b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm - Marry
The Parks and Recreation Department is repairing a well on the property for use at the greenhouse.

c) Environmental Education in AISD— Kelly
105 First graders from Cheatham elementary participated in a MRF tour @ CWD. 120 seniors at Allen
High School went to the Jon Bunker Sands Wetlands for their water conservation field trip.
d) Parks and Recreation Liaison — Cheryl
No update at this time.
e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison — Susan
The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas presented awards to the Parks and Recreation & Community Services
Departments at the City of Allen for their contributions towards scouting.
