Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Mark
Schallhorn at 6:32 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305
Century Parkway, Allen, TX.
1. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
Jesse Simmons shared about the expansion of the tree farm through the mitigation of trees from Steeple
Chase subdivision, as well as other commercial projects throughout Allen. Plans are in place to have a well
drilled at Molson Farm to ensure sufficient water resources to maintain the farm.
2. Approve Minutes of July 15, 2014 Meeting
A motion to approve July 15 minutes was made by Mardy Brown; seconded by Cheryl Baez, with all in favor.
3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Casey Bennett reported $4,446.40 unencumbered in the City account; $27,056.48 in the American National
Bank account. A motion to approve the financials was made by Marcy Brown; seconded by Cheryl Baez,
with all in favor.
4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects
• National Planting Day—September 27
Landscape designs will be prepared by Matt McComb of the Parks and Recreation Department for
implementation in the Heritage Village. This event is the third annual event, sponsored by Keep
America Beautiful. Other partners include the Allen Garden Club and the JROTC from Allen High
School.
• DEA Sponsored Medication Take Back—September 27
The Allen Police Department will be on -hand to accept medication at the Becky Lowery Freshman
Center from 30am to 2pm. Allen, Lucas and McKinney residents are invited to participate in this
event.

Educator Expo—September 30— Donations Update
Raffle items have been collected from local businesses throughout Allen. More donations are in the
process of being acquired. Each business donating at least $30 is awarded advertising opportunities
to Expo participants.

Recycled Art Contest in Schools — October 1 through October 29
There will be a focus on carton recycling as CWD has added cartons to its list of recyclable materials
in August 2014.

Arbor Day—October 25
The Parks & Recreation Department will host this event at Story Park from Sam to 12pm. There will
be a tree planting, as well as a Dl and other fun activities for the whole family.

Allen Recycles Day/Recycled Art Contest Awards Presentation — November 8
Support Staff followed up on last month's discussion and is in the process of evaluating how to best
utilize an R2, E -Steward e -cycling vendor into our events. ECS Refining has been contacted for
possible future involvement.

Arbor Day Poster Contest in Schools— November 10 through December 12
The theme for this year's contest is "Trees are Terrific ... In Cities and Towns" The Texas Trees
Foundation has agreed to a partnership with KAB and the City of Allen.

Rotary Holiday Parade— December 6
KAB Board members are in agreement that we should continue the tradition of throwing t -shirts to
the participants at the parade.
7. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives
a)

Twitter updates are still occurring on a regular basis. AISD schools and residents are reading more
of KAB's content recently and showing their appreciation by "Favoriting" or "Re -Tweeting" posted
content.
b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm —Mardy
No update at this time.
c) Environmental Education in AISD — Kelly
Clear Stream recycling containers and educational posters have been delivered to each school in
AISD to allow for recycling at the schools in the cafeteria and teacher's lounge areas. This year is the
first year that milk and juice cartons will be accepted as recyclable materials.
d) Parks and Recreation Liaison — Cheryl
At the Parks Board Meeting they discussed Ford Pool. It will be closed as the facility is in utter
disrepair New pocket parks in East Allen will be built in the coming years. Lastly, money from the
Community Development Corporation will be sent as matching funds with money from the
Governor's Award to create an entrance monument into the city.
e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison — Susan
Scout Roundtables are being held monthly and Susan will arrange for Casey or Andrea to attend
these meetings to publicize KAB events, such as the Educator Expo, Allen Recycles Day, etc.
