Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
1 With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Mark
Schallhorn at 6:33 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 in the Large Engineering Conference Room at City
Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX.
1. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
Casey Bennett shared on behalf of Urban Forester Jesse Simmons about the expansion of the tree farm
through the mitigation of trees from Steeple Chase subdivision, as well as other commercial projects
throughout Allen. Plans are being formulated to have a group of boy scouts assist with the replanting of
mitigated trees in the Dayspring Nature Preserve in October.
2. Approve Minutes of August 19, 2014 Meeting
A motion to approve August 19 minutes as amended was made by Marcy Brown; seconded by Susan
Ponder, with all in favor.
3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Casey Bennett reported $2,549.26 unencumbered in the City account; $27,123.98 in the American National
Bank account. As a part of the financial report, a request was made by Liz Farris, PTA President from Green
Elementary to reallocate grant funds previously given to Green PTA to purchase corplast signs with
environmental messages. Green Elementary PTA officially requested to reallocate grant funds to purchase
recycle containers for each classroom at Green Elementary. A motion to approve the reallocation of funds
with the stipulation to add KAB stickers to each receptacle, with the stickers provided by KAB, was made by
Mandy Brown; seconded by Stacy Gonzales, will all in favor A motion to approve the financials was made by
Susan Ponder; seconded by Stacy Gonzales, with all in favor

4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects
• National Planting Day — September 27
Volunteers will gather from 8:30am to 2pm for the implementation of the landscaping at the
Heritage Village. This event is the third annual event, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Other
partners include the Allen Garden Club, Allen Parks Foundation, City of Allen and the JROTC at Allen
High School.
• DEA Sponsored Medication Take Back—September 27
The Allen Police Department will be on -hand to accept medication at the Becky Lowery Freshman
Center from loam to 2pm. KAB Board Members will distribute information to local pharmacies and
supermarkets.
• Educator Expo—September 30—Final Update
This year's Expo will feature more exhibitors than in previous years. So far 43 people have
confirmed and we have had to order 150 additional Expo booklets in anticipation of higher
attendance at this year's event.
• Recycled Art Contest in Schools — October 1 through October 29
An e-mail has already been sent to the art teachers in AISD and PTA Environmental Chairs, as well as
the AHS Art Teachers. Many have expressed interest in Joining the contest, especially from AHS.
They will try to combine this year's theme with another contest they are participating in — Caine's
Arcade.
• Trees for Allen Tree Sale— October 1 through October 27
The City of Allen Parks Department and KAB are teaming up to sell trees to the community in
October. An order form will be in each October Water Utility Bill The five trees for sale this year
are: Bur Oak, Chinquapin Oak, Chinese Pistache, Little Gem -Magnolia, and the Vitex.
• Arbor Day—October 25
The Parks & Recreation Department will host this event at Story Park from Sam to 12pm. There will
be a tree planting, as well as a performance by the Allen Community Band and other fun activities
for the whole family.
• Trees for Allen Tree Pickup—NovemberI
Pre -ordered trees will be available for pickup from Sam to Noon at the Municipal Service Center in
the north parking lot. Unsold trees can be purchased on the day of the pickup, while supplies last.
• Allen Recycles Day/Recycled Art Contest Awards Presentation — November 8
ECS Refining has been confirmed as the new electronics collection vendor They will be moved to
the north parking lot of the Municipal Service Center in order to ensure a smooth traffic flow
throughout the two sites.
• Arbor Day Poster Contest in Schools— November 30 through December 12
The theme for this year's contest is "Trees are Terrific. An Cities and Towns" The Texas Trees
Foundation has agreed to a partnership with KAB and the City of Allen.
• KTB Affiliate Training — November 19
KAB and the City of Allen will be hosting KTB affiliates from North Texas to discuss youth programs.
We will highlight the programs at Green and Boon Elementary schools as part of this training.
• Clean Neighborhood Project in Hillside Subdivision— November 22
The City of Allen Code Compliance Division and Keep Allen Beautiful will work directly with the
residents of this subdivision and CWD to provide bulk and loose brush services to residents of this
low-income subdivision.
• Rotary Holiday Parade—December 6
KAB Board members are in agreement that we should continue the tradition of throwing t -shirts to
the participants at the parade.

7. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives
a) Communication
Twitter updates are still occurring on a regular basis.
b) Environmental Center/Molsen Farm —Mardy
The City of Allen Parks Department is seeking additional grant funding for projects at Molsen Farm.
c) Environmental Education in AISD — Kelly
Green Elementary is working to acquire funding to hire the musical group Vocal Trash to create a
song about cartons for education purposes for AISD students.
d) Parks and Recreation Liaison — Cheryl
No updates at this time.
e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison — Susan
Susan Ponder attended the Scouting Roundtable meeting in September to advertise the Educator
Expo and received good feedback from scout leaders. Casey Bennett will attend the Scouting
Routable in October
