COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM 305 CENTURY PARKWAY ALLEN, TX 75013 Pre en Stacy Gonzalez Mardy Brown Michelle Ross Mark Schallhorn Kelley Bayne Kerry Craven Absent Beverly Pruitt Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Waste Services Manager Jesse Simmons, City Forester Casey Bennett, Education Specialist Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy Gonzales at 6:31 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, T%. 1. Approve Minutes of January 17 and February 21, 2012 Meetings A motion to approve January 17 minutes was made by Mark Schallhorn; seconded by Kelley Bayne, with all in favor. A motion to approve February 21 minutes was made by Mark Schallhorn; seconded by Michelle Ross, with all in favor. 2. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs Jesse Simmons reported on the new landscaping occurring at The Edge Skate Park, trees to be planted at Celebration Park, and possible planting of perennials for summer color 3. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Donna Kliewer reported $15,137.65 unencumbered in the City account; $13,445.70 in the American National Bank account. 4. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects • Arbor Day Poster Contest— February 28 @ City Council 5 of the 6 winners attended the City Council meeting on February 28, 2012. Mark and Stacy gave prizes to the contest winners and they took pictures with the winners, KAB Board members and Mayor Terrell. Casey Bennett traveled to give the last contest winner her prize at her school. • Annual KAB Report to Council — February 28 Stacy presented the report and did a wonderful job. • KTB Awards o City of Allen won the Governor's Community Achievement Award! Donna Kliewer won the Keep Texas Beautiful Leadership Award!! Lastly, Keep Allen Beautiful /PAMRO won the Electronic Media Award!!! o The Atlas Copco application was submitted but did not receive an award. o Kyle Webre's Scout application has been completed and will be submitted in May. o The fourth nominee is Olson Elementary Environmental Club. Stacy Gonzales volunteered to write this application. This submission will be due in May as well. • Egg-cellent Family Adventure, March 31, Sam —12pm A roster of board volunteers was developed: Mardy Brown, Michelle Ross, Mark Schallhorn, and Beverly Pruitt will participate at the KAB table. • Twin Creeks Village Think Green Event— March 31, 1-4pm A roster of board volunteers was developed: Mark Schallhorn and Stacy Gonzales will assist City Support Staff. • Earthfest 2012 A roster of board volunteers was developed: Mark Schallhorn, Kelley Bayne, Michelle Ross, Mardy Brown, and Kerry Craven and her parents will assist at various times at the KAB booth. 13 student volunteers from Allen High School are currently signed up to attend the event and help with the water trailer education exhibit from the Texas A&M Agrii-ife Extension. Heidi Reese, AISD staff liaison, will be confirming the availability of this exhibit for the event. Casey Bennett will be on-site to man this exhibit. The Collin County Dutch Oven Society will be doing a demonstration outside of the meadow REI will be providing training on kayaking and water safety at the circular pond on the east side of the site. The Blacklands Prairie Raptor Center, Heard Museum and Heritage Guild will present educational materials for all participants. • Great American Cleanup Kerry Craven and Mandy Brown have agreed to support the activities occurring at City Hall. All other Board members will be supporting the activities at Watters Road and Bossy Boots. • Allen USA KAB will be coordinating volunteers and supporting the Parks and Recreation Department by having a booth for educating the attendees, as well as a helping with the waste management during the event. • Arbor Day A date for Arbor Day is still TBD. Jesse Simmons, City Forester, indicated that November is being considered for Arbor Day. The Trees for Allen tree program may be held in conjunction with Arbor Day. • Allen Recycles Day Will be held on November 3", 2012 at City Hall. 5. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives a) Communication Daily Green Tips are being sent every day. Twitter and Facebook are occurring daily and weekly, respectively. b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm Olson Elementary was not able to attend Molson Farm due to inclement weather and preparations for STAR testing. c) Environmental Education in AISD Stacy Gonzales supported the Allen Foundation for Schools Eagle Run as an Alliance for a Healthier Allen volunteer passing out water to the runners. d) Parks and Recreation Liaison KAB was not represented at the last Parks and Recreation Board meeting. KAB will continue to support the Alliance fora Healthier Allen through partnership and sponsorship opportunities e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison No news about new developments. Mardy Brown will work with Eagle Scout candidates needing to identify and complete their Eagle Scout projects.
