COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM 305 CENTURY PARKWAY ALLEN, TX 75013 Present Stacy Gonzales Beverly Pruitt Kerry Craven Kelley Bayne Michelle Ross Mardy Brown Mark Schallhorn Absent None Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Waste Services Manager Casey Bennett, Education Specialist Jesse Simmons, Urban Forester Joey Herald, Council Liaison Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy Gonzales at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX. 1. Consider Allen High School Environmental Club Grant Request Proposal Regina Taylor, Grant Coordinator from AISD, accompanied by three AHS students — Alissa Fernandez, Kaitlyn Ellis, and Cathy Chang— attended the KAB Board meeting. The students requested financial assistance to fund transportation costs to the CWD Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on December S" Their goal is to take two busloads of students (approximately 120) to this event. They will be taking video clips of their experience at the MRF to upload to the AISD website. This event will immediately follow their Recycle Bowl event and provide students an opportunity to better understand the process of how recycling actually works. KAB and CWD would also support with education sessions during the tour. A motion was made by Beverly Pruitt to fund transportation costs for this field trip up to a maximum of two buses; Michelle Ross seconded the motion, with all in favor 2. Approve Minutes of August 21, 2012 Meeting A motion to approve August 21 minutes with amendment was made by Kerry Craven; seconded by Mardy Brown, with all in favor 3. Update from Parks Department on Horticulture and Environmental Programs The Parks and Recreation Department officially changed the date for the 2012 Arbor Day celebration to Saturday, 'October 27" from 9am - 12pm. The location of the event will be Bethany lakes Park. Moving forward, the Parks Department would like to have the event on the last Saturday in October The Trees for Allen tree sale will be occurring concurrently with the Arbor Day event. 4. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update • Donor Bridge Event — September 13— After Action Report Casey Bennett reported $493.44 unencumbered in the City account; $15,779.00 in the American National Bank account. 'Results from the Donor Bridge fundraiser KAB collected pledges equaling $225, which Donor Bridge will match 7%. This money will be received in October S. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects • Governor's Award Reception — September 12— After Action Report This was a great event with about 75 participants in attendance. It was a wonderful homage to all of the hard work done by the people that make Keep Allen Beautiful what it is today. Many thanks to all the distinguished members of our community that came to this event. • Educator EXPO—September 20 o Donation update 77 registrants have already signed up for the event. Donations have been collected by KAB Board members throughout the past month totaling over $2,000 in products and vouchers to be given away at the event. • Strategic Planning Session — October 17-9am to 12pm Jim Francis from Finisar has offered to help mediate the strategic planning session at the Finisar offices. Tentative confirmations for this training: Kerry, Mandy, Michelle, Mark, Kelley, Bev, Donna, Casey. Stacy not available. • Arbor Day—October 27 (Parks) Jesse Simmons, City Forester, indicated that the Trees for Allen tree sales will be held in conjunction with Arbor Day. An Arbor Day tree will be planted to fulfill the Tree City USA requirements. • Allen Recycles Day Will be held on November 3'a, 2012 at Allen City Hall. All 9 vendors have already confirmed their attendance. • Rotary Holiday Parade—December 2 All Recycled Art Contest winners and their parents will be invited to walk with KAB and the CWD truck. • Arbor Day Poster Contest— Due December 14 This contest has been dropped by the State and national levels due to funding constraints. The City will continue the contest for 5t' graders in the coming years. KAB is coordinating with TREES to possibly create a regional contest. S. Receive Reports from Strategic Planning Initiatives a) Communication Daily Green Tips are being sent every day. Twitter updates are occurring on a regular basis. b) Environmental Center/Molson Farm No updates c) Environmental Education in AISD CWD has proposed to put recycling containers throughout Eagle Stadium to encourage a greener community. Also, a student from the Art Institute of Dallas has offered to do a PSA for KAB as a school project. KAB board discussed possibilities and will decide the focus of the PSA at a later time. d) Parks and Recreation Liaison No updates. e) Scout/Service Organization Liaison Mardy Brown and Donna Kliewer have been approached for projects for advanced Scouting awards.
