REGULAR MEETING
MARCH 16, 2010 - 6:30 P.M.

Call to order and announce a quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy Gonzales at 6:30
p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX.
1. Approve minutes of February 16 meeting
MOTION: Kerry Craven made a motion to approve the meeting minutes for February 16 as amended (move
Beverly Pruitt from "Absent" to "Present'). The motion was seconded by Carolyn Winkler and carried with all in
favor.
2. Update from Parks Dept. on Horticulture and Environmental Programs
Donna Kliewer reported that the trees ordered from Trees for Alien had been delivered. The Parks Department has
been working in Dayspring Nature Preserve and the Arbor Day Poster Contest will be voted on soon.
3. H.O.P.E. Team presentation
The H.O.P.E Team is a teen group that educates the public on plastic bag use.
MOTION: Mardy Brown made a motion to grant the H O.P.E. Team $250.00 to use for their educational
programs. The motion was seconded by Kerry Craven and carried with all in favor.
4. Receive update on KAB Events and Projects
a. CWD Cart Audit update
The cart audit is still in progress and the Thursday trash part of the audit is scheduled for later this month.
�! Residences with unpaid carts will be contacted via letter.
® b. Tees for Allen — sale: January through mid-February
This year's sales were comparable to those of previous years. 280 trees were sold — 14 were sold at the
Arbor Day Celebration at Story Park and 16 were donated to the City
c. Susta nable Landscape Seminar Series — February through June
"Secrets of the Waterwise Gardener — 7 Principles" was held on March 6 and had 25 attendees "Native
Plant Landscapes — Best Plants for Our Area" will be held on March 20.
d. Arbor Day —AAR
200 visitors were counted at the Keep Allen Beautiful booth and 27 trees were planted on site Daisy
Scouts presented colors at the ceremony, which everyone seemed to enjoy Micah Pace of the Texas
Forest Service spoke and other participating organizations included the Allen Garden Club, Collin County
Master Gardeners, Texas Instruments Chinese Initiative, Allen Early Childhood PTA, Cub Scouts, Evans
Elementary, and Norton Ecoliteracy Club.
e. Litter Index—March 18
Two volunteer teams will survey the city to complete this Keep America Beautiful affiliate requirement
E Eeacellent Family Adventure — March 27
This event will be held in the Civic Plaza until noon and participants should be ready by 8'30 a.m. KAB
will play the "Talkin' Trash" spinner game, with new spinners, and give various prizes in addition to the
provided Easter eggs. KAB donated an adult shirt and a youth shirt for inclusion in the Parks -furnished
giveaway basket.
g. EarthFest 2010 (Watters Creek environmental fair) — April 10
KAB will host a creek cleanup starting at Bethany near the Wachovia Bank at 8 00 a.m. Booths open at
1000 a.m. and close at 4.00 p.m. CWD will help KAB provide recycling for the event.
h. Live Green Expo(Plano) — April 17
This event is held at Plano Centre and will run from 9:00 a m. to 7.00 p.m this year Joel Salatin, natural
farmer and author, is the keynote speaker.
i. Great American Cleanup —Apri124
This event is held on Bossy Boots with shredding at City Hall. The same businesses & non -profits from
last year will be on hand, plus First -Shred First -Shred participated in the last Allen Recycles Day and
will provide shredding.
j. KTB Youth Awards — due Mas I 1 (City Hall by April 30)
Berry Craven is working on the H.O.P.E team nomination and Amanda Mattle has emailed Mardy
Brown the Eagle Scout workbook of his nominee for reference
Is. Reuse -a -Shoe Contest — April (KAB to present awards end of May)
Four schools have responded that they will participate so far. 'rhe contest runs March 29 — April 16 (3
weeks). Collected shoes will be sent to Haiti through One 5 Foundation, Orphans of the World, or Airline
Ambassadors. There is one winning school and one winning classroom from all of AISD. Winners will be
recognized at a Council meeting in May
1. KTB Conference(Austin)— June 2124
The early registration deadline is May 28.
m. USA Celebration — June 26
Booths will open much later this year than last year— 4:00 p.m.
n. Electronics Collection — Aueust
We still do not have a date from Cyclone yet.
o. Educator Expo — September 23
This will be held at the AISD Administration Building again at the same time as last year, 4:30 p.m. —
6.00 p.m
p Home for the Harvest festival ( Village at Allen) — September
We still do not have a specific date for this event yet.
5. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update
Donna Kliewer reported that the City KAB account balance is $13,805.84 and the American National Bank
balance is $21,908.90.
6. Receive reports from Strategic Planning initiatives
a. Communication
KAB has just over 400 followers on Twitter. Amanda Mattle tweets daily eco -tips (which Kerry Craven
sends via email), KAB events, and other pertinent information
b. Environmental Center
Nothing new to report.
c. Environmental Education in AISD
Nothing new to report
d Parks and Recreation Liaison
The next meeting is in May

The regular session of the Keep Allen Beautiful board was adjourned at 728 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.
