L COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM 305 CENTURY PARKWAY ALLEN, TX 75013 Present Kerry Craven Mark Schallhom Stacy Gonzales Beverly Pruitt John Ogrizovich Carolyn Winkler Absent Mandy Brown Guest Sara Skinner of Leadership Allen Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Waste Services Manager Denise Moore, City Forester Amanda Mattle, Waste Services Education Specialist Call to order and announce a quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair, Stacy Gonzales at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX. 1. Approve minutes of March 16 meeting No minutes available 2. Welcome to new member New member Mark Schallhom is officially welcomed by KAB board. 3. KAB annual activities list KAB is an active board. Participation in all activities is not mandatory, but participation in the two annual city- wide events (Great American Cleanup and Allen Recycles Day) is preferred. It is a good idea for board members to keep track of the hours they volunteer in representation of KAB. 4. Update from Parks Dept. on Horticulture and Environmental Programs Denise Moore reported that the Parks Department removed 48.4 tons of wood from two locations in SunCreek resulting from tornado damage two years ago and over 19 tons from the woods. Soil from a renovated ball field was used to amend trails. Plant material was provided for the Heritage Village church Winter color will be pullet soon and summer color installed. Tree seedlings for the Great American Cleanup are ready Parks is already preparing for Allen USA. Four crape myrtles were relocated to Heritage Park. The tree farm will need larger pots soon to step up the plants at the tree farm. 5. Allen Eagles football program advertisement MOTION: Kerry Craven made a motion to decline to advertise in the Allen Eagles football program. The motior was seconded by Beverly Pruitt and carried with all in favor 6. Receive update on KAB Events and Projects a. CWD Cart Audit update The audit was finished last week b. Sustainable Landscape Seminar Series — February through June There were 31 adults and three kids at the Native Plant Landscapes class and 56 adults at the Square Foot Vegetable Gardening class. The next class is Sustainable Landscape Maintenance on May 15. c. Litter Index —AAR Allen's score was up Just a little from last year, but still between an average rating of 1 and 2, with I being the best d. Eeacellent Family Adventure —AAR 902 visitors came to KAB's booth at this event to play the "Talkin' Trash" spinner game. The event was well - organized and fun for everyone. e EarthFest 2010 (Watters Creek environmental fair) —AAR 43 volunteers participated in the KAB-sponsored cleanup prior to the event, where an owl was rescued by some brave, wildlife -friendly Scouts. There were 536 visitors to the KAB booth, where we played the well- received "Talkm' Trash" spinner game. f. Live Green Exoo (Plano) — decided not to participate Due to circumstances beyond our control, KAB decided not to participate in the event this year. g Great American Cleanup—April 24 Appliance rebates will not be signed at this event. A volunteer is needed to take pictures of the event. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. h. KTB Youth Awards — due May I I (City Hall by April 30) The awards may be submitted online this year. i. Reuse -a -Shoe Contest — April (KAB to present awards end of Mav ) 5,851 pairs of shoes were collected in the schools and 73 pairs were collected at various City of Allen sites. Evans Elementary was the grand prize winner with 1,409 pairs of shoes. j. KTB Conference(Austin)— June 21-24 May 28 is the priority registration deadline. Board members who wish to attend should notify Donna Kliewer or Amanda Mattle before this date. Attendees need not attend the entire conference. k. USA Celebration — June 26 Preparation the day before the event was discussed. Volunteers will be needed for setup. I Electronics Collection — August We still do not have a specific date m. Educator Expo — September 23 This event will be held at the AISD Administration Building again this year. Donors who contribute a minimum amount of merchandise to this event may provide information to be included in giveaway bags. n. Home for the Harvest festival (Village at Allen) — September No information on this event at present. 7. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Donna Kliewer reported $13,532.90 in the American National Bank account and $11, 684.67 in the City KAB account. 8. Receive reports from Strategic Planning initiatives a Communication Kerry Craven and Amanda Mattle are maintaining communication via email and Twitter. Ir Environmental Center Nothing new to report c Environmental Education in AND Stacy Gonzales discussed setting up a meeting with Lisa Caste, Director of Curriculum and Staff Development. d. Parks and Recreation Liaison Beverly Pruitt will attend the May 10 meeting. Adiouro The regular session of the Keep Allen Beautiful board was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010.
