HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - Library Board - 2008 - 07/01 - RegularALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY REGULAR MEETING JULY 1, 2008 Present: Donald Wing, Board Chair Board members: Donna Drews Vanous Mary Jane Hamilton Ruth Pringle Jo Long Susan McDaniel City Staff: Jeff Timbs, Library Director Dale Lackey, Senior Administrative Assistant Guests: Kathleen Vaught — Friends of the Allen Public Library Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present With a quorum of the Board members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to order by Board Chair, Donald Wing, at 6:30 p.m on Tuesday July I, 2008 in the Board Room of the Allen Public Library, 300 North Allen Drive, Allen, Texas. 1. Citizen's Comments. There were no Citizen Comments. 2. Approve Minutes of June 3, 2008 Regular Meeting. Motion: Upon A motion made by Board Member, Mary Jane Hamilton, and a second by Board Member, Donna Drews Various , the Board voted (6) for and none (0) opposed to approve the June 3, 2008 minutes. 1 3. Elect Secretary for Library Board Motion: Upon A motion made by Board Member, Susan McDaniel, and a second by Board Member, Donna Drews Various , the Board voted (6) for and none (0) opposed to nominate Ruth Pringle as Secretary for the remainder of the year. ALLEN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD REGULAR MEETING JULY 1, 2008 4. Review Monthly Statistics and Suggestion Forms. PACE Monthly Statistics were not ready due to the board meeting falling on the first of the month We have added a box at the Circulation desk for people to provide us with their email address so we can add them to their records and they can receive reminders and also overdue notices. This will not replace the Elf. It will save on postage costs and the 3 -part forms that are expensive to buy, We had a suggestion on the materials for the MP 3 players to be shelved separately from the audio books. Jeff told the board we do not have enough materials at this time to do this. They are marked with a different spine label so patrons can tell them apart. Another suggestion was putting a patron's card number on the receipt that is printed out McKinney is doing this. Jeff told the board that could be considered a privacy matter and these receipts are left in books many times. 5. Update on Public Art Project. Library Director, Jeff Timbs gave a report on the Public Art Project. The project is to recognize the Founders of the library and Donors The City Council appointed a committee to evaluate the artist for this project The committee started out with sixty-five applicants and have narrowed it down to three. This next week the committee will be interviewing the three artist and looking at their presentations to decide which one they will go with. 6. Items of Interest. Library Director, Jeff Timbs announced the new Children's Manager started today Her naive is Lee Sparks and comes to the library with a lot of experience. Lee has a broad experience base as she has been a Library Director and worked in the Children's and Reference departments at the Seattle Library She gained a lot of her experience in the Austin area before coming to the Rowlette Library and then to us Board member, Donna Drews Various announced the Friends of the Library have chosen the next book for the ALLen Reads Program. The title is "Seed Folks" and the author is Sid Fleischman. Donna said they will start the ALLen Reads program earlier this year. She asked the board to think about anyone who could help her this year with the evaluations as it is too much for one person Jeff told the board that Tom Keener has contacted the author of the book and normally he does not make personal appearances. Tom asked him to consider working in an appearance when he comes to our area to do the Hockaday School. Maybe we can split the cost between us. Don Wing gave an update on the Endowment Board. They hope to have an event in late August or September to announce the Endowment Board to the public to let them know about the Endowment Fund and the purpose of it. 7.
