HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - Parks and Recreation Board - 2019 - 08/12 - Regular PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD REGULAR MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 12, 2019 Parks and Recreation Board Present: Michael Smiddy, Chair Geoben Johnson III,Vice Chair Tom Cowart John Holley(late) Paul Davidson Tricia Losavio (late) LaReeda Rentie(late) Absent: City Staff: Tim Dentler, Director, Parks and Recreation David Angeles, Assistant Director, Parks and Recreation Brian Bristow, Assistant Director, Parks and Recreation Carrie Cessna, Assistant Director, Parks and Recreation Travis Cunniff, Recreation Manager, Parks and Recreation Joey Ramos, Program Supervisor,Athletics Jennifer Robinson, Support Specialist, Parks and Recreation Kim Spearman, Site Superintendent, Parks and Recreation Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum of the Parks and Recreation Board present, Chair Smiddy called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 12, 2019, in the Classroom of the Allen Senior Recreation Center at 451 St. Mary Drive,Allen,Texas. 1) Approve Minutes of the April 8, 2019, Called Meeting Motion: Upon a motion by Member Cowart and a second by Member Davidson,the Parks and Recreation Board voted four(4) for and none (0) opposed to approve the minutes from the April 8, 2019 Called Meeting as presented. The motion carried. 2) Appoint Two Senior Advisory Committee Members Member Cowart reported on the selection process and then made the following motion. Parks and Recreation Board Minutes August 12,2019 Page 2 Motion: Upon a motion by Member Cowart and a second by Member Davidson,the Parks and Recreation Board voted five(5) for and none(0)opposed to appoint Dottie Gandy and Lester Velez and reappoint Connie Holiday to the Senior Advisory Committee. The motion carried. 3) Receive Subcommittee Updates Chair Smiddy reported that the Exchange Parkway Recreation Center Steering Committee has met five times and will have one more meeting before meeting with the public. 4) Update on Spirit Park Operations Assistant Director, Carrie Cessna, introduced Kim Spearman, Site Superintendent, and Travis Cunniff, Recreation Services Manager, to give an update on Spirit Park programming and maintenance. Travis reported on league play, tournaments and the economic impact they provide as well as concessions. Kim covered the maintenance needs of artificial turf,both daily and bi-monthly/monthly, as well as some turf challenges that are being addressed. Upcoming items including perimeter netting, temporary parking lot, trash mitigation, and participant behavior. 5) Update on Exchange Parkway Recreation Center Tim Dentler, Director, shared information on concept designs, construction timelines and potential funding sources for the future Exchange Parkway Recreation Center. Once complete, the feasibility study will be presented to the board. 6) Update on Future Projects Assistant Director, Brian Bristow, gave an update on Rolling Hills Park,previewing what would be presented at the Public Input meeting directly following this meeting. Tim Dentler, then gave a brief update on the McDermott property, located along Rowlett Creek between McDermott Drive and Alma Drive,which was recently donated to the City of Allen. The land will be kept in its natural state, other than a trail addition for connectivity purposes. The Allen Parks Foundation was granted a$1 million endowment that will be used for maintenance on the Eugene McDermott Park property. 7) Items of Interest a. Items for Future Agendas b.
