O-8-2-54An,Ordiance providing for overlapping or staggered terms for the
Aldermen of the City of Allen, Texas;
Whereas, Article 979 of the revised Civil Statutes provides that when
a general law city is not divided into wards the City Council may determine
by ordinance what number of aldermen shall go out of office in one year
and the manner of deciding which shall hold office for the long term
and which shall have the long term.
Whereas, it is deemed advisable by the City Council of the City of
Allen that the terms of the Aldermen shall be overlapping in order to
promote stability in the City Government;
Now therefore, Be It Ordained, by the City Council of the City of
Allen, Texas:
Section 1. That three Aldermen who will be elected on the first
Tuesday in April 1954 shall serve a term of one year or until their
successors are elected and qualified. Their successors shall be elected
at a general city election on the first Tuesday in April 1955 for a
term of two years. Thereafter, three Aldermen shall be elected on the
first Tuesday in April on each odd year.
The Mayor and two Aldermen elected on the first Tuesday
in April 1954 shall serve for two year terms or until their successors
are elected and qualified. Their successors shall be elected at the
general city election on the first Tuesday in April 1956, and thereafter
on the first Tuesday in April of the even years.
Section 2. That immediately after the general city election on
the first Tuesday in April 1954, the five Aldermen elected shall decide
by lot which three Aldermen shall hold office for the one year term,
and which two Aldermen shall hold office for the two year term.
