Workshop with AISD Board of Trustees and Chamber Executive Board, Discussing Issues of Common Interest (Agenda Item H) ALLEN CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL CALLED JOINT MEETING JULY 20, 19% PAGE 2 The group participated in a team -budding exercise as developed by Facilitator Linda Gardner. The agenda for the day was reviewed to include: rock game, meeting agreements, introductions, create a vision, identify and prioritize actions, and final wrap-up. The meeting agreements included the following issues: One speaker at a time Respond to speaker's comments before moving on Stay on task Constructive disagreement is positive, not personal There are no bad ideas Make sure comments are moving task forward Everyone is responsible for keeping on track Focus on a win-win outcome John Sprague (Chamber) informed the group that the Chamber recently reviewed their customer base. They were not sure what the important goals were for the other entities of the city, however. They felt it was important to see what they were before the Chamber could decide on their new priorities. This is a very positive opportunity for Allen. Barbara Erwin (School) indicated that we have an incredible opportunity as a committee—it comes only once in a lifetime. We are now at an incubation stage and what this body decides to do is a legacy for the future. We have a blank page in front of us We cannot look back at what we did, we will only get where we have always gotten. We, in this room, have all the puzzle pieces in front of us for an opportunity of a lifetime. Jon McCarty (City) stressed the importance of developing a vision for the community Then each entity can contribute to that vision. The objectives for the meeting include the following: To create a vision for the community of Allen, Texas To encourage creative collaboration between the three city entities (and other groups) Chamber of Commerce City Government School District The community of Allen does not just want to make it into the playoffs, the community wants the championship ring. Qualities of a vision were discussed and include the following: Statement of purpose, direction and excellence Reflects your identity and pride—be distinctive It's a stretch ■�^ What's the outcometbenefit for the citizens LThe group did individual visioning and shared with each other. After a workable vision was created, it was decided that it be sent to a subgroup for final refinement. The subgroup members include John Sprague, ALLEN CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL CALLED JOINT MEETING JULY 20, 1996 PAGE 3 Barbara Erwin and Dave Powyszynski with other interested individuals participating if they so desire. They will complete the task by August 20, 1996 and will consider another meeting to be held at TRW with a target date of Saturday, September 14. Vision: Allen is the home where strong spiritual and family values are blended into a shared community, soaring into the future. "Come home to live, work and do business in Allen " Items of Interest (Agenda Item ID) Mayor Lilly informed Council of arrangements for Bill Maffioli. (Agenda Item VDI) The AISD Board of Trustees, the Allen City Council and the Chamber of Commerce Executive Board adjourned the Special Called Joint Meeting at 12:13 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 1996.
