MEMBERS PRESENT: Don Proeschel, Chairman Mickey Christakos, Vice -Chairman Helen Johnson, Secretary Richard Saunders Gary Edstrom David Medina MEMBERS ABSENT• Clint Miller CITY STAFF PRESENT: Mark Thornton, Director of Parks and Recreation Trey Goodman, Recreation Supervisor I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman, Don Proeschel, called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. II. CONSENT AGENDA Approval of Minutes from September 9, 1985, Regular Called Meeting. MOTION: There was a motion made by David Medina and seconded by Mickey Christakos to approve the Minutes from September 9, 1985, as read. The motion carried, 6 for, 0 against. III. ELECTION OF OFFICERS A. Chairman Don Proeschel was nominated for the office of Chairman. B. Secreatary Helen Johnson was nominated for the office of Secretary. All offices were accepted by acclamation. IV. DIRECTORS REPORT A. Greenbelt/Linear Park Study Director Thornton reported that the Greenbelt/Linear Park Study was in the data acquisition mode, as well as mapping. The mapping phase is the longest part of the study. B. Fall Athletic Activities Thornton reported that the Fall Volleyball Leagues began Monday evening, October 14, with 10 teams signing up for two leagues (spiking and non -spiking) which will play one evening per week. The Fall Softball League is in the process of finishing their season. There were 40 teams signed up for the Fall League. C. Policy Manual Thornton indicated that sample policy manuals were now being collected from other cities for review by staff. D. Senior Citizens's Update Trey Goodman gave a brief update on the current activities of the Allen Senior Citizens Organiza- tion, indicating that they were in the process of a yearly trip to Brownwood and would be returning Friday. He also told the Board members that he was asking the Ministerial Alliance for assistance in obtaining volunteer drivers for the Senior Citizens Van on Mondays and Thursdays. He indicated that elections has been held and ' that Lucille Brazeal was the current President, with Glenda Ford serving as Vice -President. F PAGE 3 PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD MINUTES - REGULAR CALLED MEETING OCTOBER 14, 1985 He reported that there approximately 35-40 daily participation on an average. E. Teen Recreation Center Thornton presented a brief overview of the history of the Teen Recreation Center for those not familiar with it. Contact was made with Jerry Cook of Allen High School, who inturn contacted students he felt would have a high interest level in such a program. Trey Goodman met with 40 students who indicated a strong interest in supporting the center and contributing to it. REVIEW AND DISCUSS THE CONSTRUCTION OF FORD PARK FACILITIES Director Mark Thornton shared a slide presentation with the Board Members on the progress at Ford Park. He also indicated that coaches in the area had indicated a strong interest in swim teams. Swimming Instructors also were showing ah interest in working at the pool upon completion. Thornton invited any Board Members interested, to let him know and he could arrange a tour of the site at their convenience. VI. OTHER BUSINESS A. TPWD Thornton reported that the remainder of funding for Ford Park which is $455,000 would come up for review by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department November 7, 1985. He indicated he felt positive about the remainder of the funding being made available to the City at that time. N.R.P.A. Thornton referred the Board members to the calendar of events included in their agenda packets, pointing out the main emphasis on Saturday and Sunday for the Citizen Board Members. Any Board members interested are to contact Thornton. He also indicated that the members may register on-site if more convenient, and submit a receipt to him for reimbursement.
