Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present With a quorum present, Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Kerry Craven at 635 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, Texas. 2. Introduction of Guests Susan Chisholm, Allen resident and representative of Abitibi Bowater's Paper Retriever Recycling Program was introduced. 3. Approve minutes of November 17, 2008 MOTION: Ms. Buckley moved to accept the November 17, 2008 minutes. Ms. Gonzales seconded the motion, with all in favor. 4. Receive Financial Report/Budget Update Ms. Kliewer reported a total KAB account balance of $18,585.08 and City funds of $10,421.03. 1i 5. Communication Ms. Craven and Mr. Armstrong suggested that docs .google.com can provide possible environmental tips for Allen email newsletter. "A Nurtured World" will be held on April ]d from 7-9 pm. AHA may help to promote this event b. Environmental Center Ms. Buckley reported findings on environmental facilities to be toured for amenities to possibly be included in Allen's future Environmental Center. c. Environmental Education in AISD Ms. Gonzalez and Ms. Buckley reported that AND schools are involved with KAB and are on board with KAB programs and recycling in the schools. One of the topics discussed at AHA was that certain environmental education curriculum in schools be presented to a certain age group each year, i.e., 3" graders across the board get recycling education, 5'h graders at all schools tour the MRF, etc Ms. Kliewer reported that AND schools are currently using 22 Clear Stream recycling containers for cafeteria and hallway recycling. Ms. Kliewer reported that All Pro Dads at Norton Elementary are conducting a fixup/cleanup/greenup event and KAB donated 15 bags of mulch to assist. it. Parks and Recreation Liaison Ms. Pruitt volunteered at Parks & Recreation's Rudolph Run in December and urged Board members to volunteer at the next run. She reported that Allen USA monthly meetings begin in January It was suggested by KAB that City Council be served dinner on compostable serveware during a Council meeting prior to the USA Celebration to promote a zero waste event. Shelley George will be consulted to see if this is feasible. Ms. Pruitt will attend the February 9, 2009 meeting of the Parks & Recreation Board. 6. Discussion of NCTCOG MFC and Reuse -A -Bae Grants and educational opportunities Ms. Kliewer reported on AHA — Alliance for a Healthy Allen — explaining that Reuse -A -Bag Day was presented to AHA to possibly be an educational item at the EEConsortium event, Seeding a Healthy Community in April. The robot is in and they are waiting for the second head for this portion of the Educational grant to be finished. Kathy Keller-Mielke is working on the the MFC grants and has educational materials created. 7. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects a. Rotary Holiday Parade - AAR b. Boards & Commissions Appreciation Dinner— AAR c. Trees for Allen deadline for orders is Feb 13 at 5pm. d. Arbor Day —Marcb7 Arbor Day Poster winner: Lillian Zha, from Evans Elementary, had a tree planted in her honor on January 23, 2009 Ms. Buckley attended as KAB representatives. Denise Moore, Urban Forester, spoke at the ceremony with Evans entire 5'h grade participating. City Council presentation of winners is on Feb 24" e. EE Event at Watters Creek — April 4 Encouraged KAB board members and families to attend and participate! KAB is hosting and will also have a table to hand out Reuse a Bags and educational information. L A Nurtured World — April 14 Library auditorium is secured and contracts are in place. Discussion of the need for promotion of the event to Allen residents. g. Live Green Expo — April 18 City of Plano is requesting volunteers for various areas. KAB will have a booth and needs volunteers to give Allen residents information and possibly Reuse A Bags. There will be various recycling opportunities at the event. More information will be forthcoming. h. Great American Cleanup — April 25 i. KTB Youth Awards Due — April 28 at noted that KAB needs to find youth and youth groups to submit for KTB awards. 8. Discussion of Governor's Community Achievement Award and Keep Texas Beautiful Awards More submissions were discussed. KAB members will write the submissions. Discussion of timing for the litter index, which must be scheduled and completed for KTB and KAmB reports. North Texas Leadership Conference may be considered part of leadership training for the KTB award. Ms. Buckley and Ms. Gonzalez will attend the Leadership Conference. 9.
