Min - Keep Allen Beautiful Board - 1997 - 04/16 - RegularCITY OF ALLEN KEEP ALLEN BEAUTIFUL COMMITTEE APRIL 16, 1997 Staff Present: Jesse Ingram, Public Works (Streets) Craig Gillis, Fire Department Bobby Trevino, Parks and Recreation Mike Stephens, Police Department Joe Del Ferro, Community Development Kathy Parkhurst, Economic Development Audrey Smyth, Community Development Council members: Melissa Owen Other Members: Heidi Smalley, Allen Environmental Action League Guests: Jon McCarty, City Manager WORKSHOP SESSION - 9:00 A.M. With the above members present, the third monthly meeting of the Keep Allen Beautiful Committee was called to order. Melissa Owen, Chairperson, started with introducing the newest member from the Fire Department, Craig Gillis. Melissa then introduced our guest, Jon McCarty, our City Manager, and he gave us a little pep talk about supporting us 100 percent and was encouraged by our enthusiasm in going forward with this program. Jon also expressed his desire to see us work with the city council to help plan our future projects and that he hoped we could remain focused on the broad picture of the whole community For example: Open spaces within the city limit that will have future residential development backing up or adjacent to them which now is an engineering decision. Jon would like to see Keep Allen Beautiful have a more detailed hand in beautifying our community Jon finished with reminding us of the importance attached to this effort and for us to keep a broad overall view of what we we trying to accomplish. Heidi Smalley, Chairperson for the 1997 Allen Trash -Off Day, gave us a report on the activities held on April 5, 1997 Approximately 21-1/2 tons of garbage and debris has been collected so far and approximately 400 plus volunteers participated in this yews event. Heidi showed some of the before, during and after pictures that she is going to submit to the Allen American. Jesse reported that they still had several locations to clean up and would be submitting weigh tickets. Melissa reported on the status of establishing a "Keep Allen Beautiful' Board. Notices will be in KEEP ALLEN BEAUTIFUL APRIL 16, 1997 PAGE the Saturday and Wednesday Allen American Papers for the next 2 (two) weeks. Applications must be completed and returned to the City Secretary's Office by noon on Tuesday, May 6, 1997. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for May 19, 20, and 21, 1997, and all committee members can assist in the interviewing. Springfest update was provided by Melissa and Audrey Set-up time is scheduled for 7:30 P.M., with activities starting at 10:00 A.M., and ending at 5:00 P.M., on Saturday, April 26, 1997, at Ford Park. Informational materials have been copied and are ready to pass out. Melissa was going to call "Keep Texas Beautiful" to request brochures and is going to try to get a "trash pizza' to display Heidi was going to bring a portable or womn composting bin. Bobby said he would talk to Johnny about setting up and removing the 10'x10' tent he is loaning to us to use for the day. Audrey is going to make a donation jar and lineup tables and chairs. Craig suggested we needed something to attract people to our booth and it was decided to offer orange slices. "Fact" and "Data' sheets for the "Keep Allen Beautiful" Board Appointments and "Adopt A Spot" sign up sheets will be available. Several committee members said they would be available to help work the booth throughout the day The "tree planting" session and press release with the Allen American is scheduled for Friday, April 18, 1997, at 2:00 P.M. All members are encouraged to participate. Melissa gave us an update on the new garbage contract with CWD. New service is suppose to begin on June 1, 1997. There is still no definite answer on whether or not we will be getting new garbage and recycling containers. Heidi reported that all plastic except #6, all colored glass and grass clippings will be picked up. Some commercial merchants in Allen are being asked to purchase and sell the paper bags that will be used for grass clippings. Jesse offered a slogan - "Keep Allen Beautiful - You Do Make A Difference" Kathy passed out Plano Utility Bill inserts she received which included a "City Directory" and a "Up Coming Events" flyer. The whole group expressed hope in that the City will adopt a new utility billing system to accommodate sending information to our residents in the future. Jesse showed us some yellow plastic tape that he can get from a supplier that can print any message we want to advertize our cause. Next meeting will be held on May 7, 1997, at 9:00 P.M., in the Conference Room at the Municipal Annex. Meeting adjourned. These minutes were approved on the 7th day of May, 1997.
