COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM 305 CENTURY PARKWAY ALLEN, TX 75013 Present Carolyn Winkler John Ogrizov ich Stacy Gonzales Mardv Brown Beverly Pruitt Kerry Craven Absent David Buchanan Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Waste Services Manager Denise Moore, City Forester Call to order and announce a quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Stacy Gonzales at 6 33 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, in the Council Conference Room at Crty Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, TX 1. Approve minutes of October 20 meeting MOTION: Kerry Craven made a motion to approve the meeting minutes for October 20 as amended (item I — David Buchanan's nomination of Stacy Gonzales for Chair was seconded by Mardy Brown). The motion was seconded by Caroti n and carried with all in favor 2. Update from Parks Dept. on Horticulture and Envirnnmental Programs Denise Moore reported that all winter color is out and Parks is decorating with lights for the holiday season The tree lighting ceremony at City Ifall will be December 4. A resident reported an old Packard in Cottonwood Creek in Allen Station Park. 3. Parks and ,recreation Dept Grant for Recycling at Allen Station Park A grant to initiate recycling at Allen Station Park was approved for funding by the Council of Governments Resource Conservation Council This grant is one of the top few highest scoring projects in the history of the local project grant program, thanks to the efforts of Kelly McGinnis. If this program goes well, it may possiblyexpand to other parks It is possible that Keep Allen Beautiful's help will be needed for recycling education 4. Receive update on KAB Events and Projects a. Recycled Art Contest —AAR There were entries from grades Kindergarten through 9°i grade except 71' Grades K-6 had many entries, grades 8 and 9 had one entry each b Allen Recvcl�y—AAR 988 vehicles were processed at this event The large number of people who would rather recycle and donate items rather than send them to the landfill indicates a highly educated society' First - Shred may donate services again — they collected 12,200 lbs of paper. Gary Edwards received over 100 bicycles to be refurbished and distributed over the holidays. c. National Arbor Day Poster Contest — November Three entries were received. School principals and PTA Em ironmental Chairs have been contacted. Keep Allen Beautiful members and City employees will vote on entries d CWD Can Audit — November The audit has been done for the past five years. It begins with the Monday schedule in November. Verification takes about four to five weeks. The audit continues through March. So far, we are not finding as many unpaid carts as in past years. e Rotary Holiday Parade — December 6 The parade starts in the afternoon at Cedar Drive in Allen Station Park. Keep Allen Beautiful is near the front of the parade Wmnets of the Recycled Art Contest will walk with us and hand out shirts, reusable bags, and "Litter Bugs Me" bracelets Scouts will carry two banners: one in the front of the parade that announces that "this is a litter -free event;' and one in the back that asks, "have }roil picked up your litter today" f Boards and Commissions Dinner— December I I This is an RSVP event which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Senior Center There was a discussion about what events from this year should be highlighted. participation in Seeding a Healthy Community, Reuse -a -Bag giveaway, multi -family recycling, working With Parks & Recreation on the Allen USA Celebration, and the Educator Expo. g Trees for Allen — sale: January through mid-Febrr ary A draft of Flier to be included with the December water bill was discussed. Delivery will begin February 22 with the number of trees that must be delivered determining the end date. Some Scouts may volunteer to help elderly or disabled residents to plant their trees. Purchases currently include 50 of each kind of tree. h. KTB Individual Awards — due February Nominations were discussed. Kerry Craven has an outline for each submission that she will send to all members It is recommended that members do no more than one submission. Keep Texas Beautiful prefers numbers and quantifiable results to be included in the nomination Youth awards will be due in April. I. Arbor Dav — March 7 phis will be at Smry Park Where to plant donated trees from Trees for Allen was discussed — Denise Moore reports that there is some difficulty in finding places to plant new trees and for 1 staff to maintain new plantings where there is no uTlgation j Seeding a I lealthy Community — April 10 2010 Proposals have been accepted and it appears that this event will be at Watters Creek next year. KAB will participate as they did last year. k. ANurtured World — TBD We may need to shelve this idea for the time being. Amanda Mattle suggested asking if the presentation could be adapted to something that could be done in the grassy area in Watters Creek during Seeding a Healthy Community 5. Receive Financial Report/Flati Update Donna Kliewer reported $20,176 55 in the American National Bank of Texas account and $17,849 43 in the Otv fund. 6. Receive reports from Strategic Planning initiatives it Communication Kern Craven is continuing daily environmental tips via email. Weekly tips are posted in the City of Allen newsletter Amanda Mattle tweets (posts on Twitter cam) the emailed environmental tips, am upcoming Keep Allen Beautiful events, and occasional noteworthy environmentally friendly pieces of information It. Environmental Center Nothing to report at this time. c Environmental Education in AISD Pat Buckley was in town and went with Donna Kliewer and Stacy Gonzales to meet with Dr. M. Zoeller, Assistant Superintendent for District Improvement & Accountability, where they discussed teacher awareness training on programs that are available through Keep Allen Beautiful There appears to be sonic progress with Stacv Gonzales' promotion to receive less paper in Tuesday folders d Parks and Recreation Liaison Beverly Pruitt attended the November 9 Parks Board meeting where she noted some upcoming volunteer opportunities, which she will email to everyone Donna notified the board that Alliance for a I lealthier Allen has ins ited a volunteer from keep Allen Beautiful to participate The volunteer should have knowledge of Keep Allen Beautiful's activities. Beverly Pruitt, Stacy Gonzales, and John Ogrizovich will alternate attendance at A.H.A. meetings. Beverly Pruitt proposed Keep Allen Beautiful polo shirts with embroidery for members to wear to events where they represent Keep Allen Beautiful. Kerry Craven will research and email choices. Passing on kudos for the 'Fool Trailer to the Parks Board was discussed — it was used for the City's Employee Day of Caring at two senior residents' homes. Mardy Brown will attend the February 8 meeting of the Parks Board. 7. Discuss submission of next year's KTB awards (due in February and April) Previoush discussed 8. Motion to cancel December meetine MOTION: Kerry Craven made a motion to cancel the December meeting due to holiday activities John Ognzovich seconded the motion and it carried with all in favor.
