Call to Order and Announce a Ouorum is Present With a quorum present, Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Pat Buckley at 6:34 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, Texas. 2. Public Recognition/Citizens Comments/ Introduction of Guests Tony Hill, Leadership Allen representative, was recognized. Tara Farm and a Wal-Mart project manager were present to discuss a future partnership between Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market and KAB. Wal-Mart is pushing sustainability and desires to provide further assistance to KAB endeavors. Wal-Mart announced they will provide refreshments to Ford Middle School landscaping work day on June 21, 2008. 3. Update by Parks and Recreation on Various and Upcoming Events Susan Campbell gave a farewell presentation, highlighting her partnership with KAB during her 7 years in Allen. Donna Kliewer presented an award to Nis. Campbell on behalf of KAB, honoring her dedication to KAB. 4. Approve minutes of March 18, 2008 and April 15, 2008 No minutes were available. Receive Financial Report/ Budget Update The board received $125.00 from the J.C. Penney Company Fund on behalf of the volunteer service of Dan Jenkins, retired board member and J.C. Penney employee. 6. Update on KAB Events and Projects • KAB and C WD report to Council, May 13, 2008, AAR: Donna Kliewer reported that City Council was pleased with the presentation. Pat Buckley noted that CWD's presentation highlighted many of their partnerships with KAB. • Eagle Scout project recognition at Council, May 13, 2008, AAR: Susan Campbell noted that she gave the presentations to the scouts. KAB supplied certificates to each scout and her Green Team as well. • KTB Youth Awards, due May 13, 2008, AAR: Audra Martin announced the Allen winners from and thanked the board members who contributed to the award submissions. Winners will be recognized at the KTB Conference in June. • NCTCOG grant cycle, due May 16, 2008, AAR: Audra reported that a grant was submitted for the purchase of 20,000 reusable bags with accompanying educational material • Tees and Jeans Drive, May 19-23, 2008 in AND schools. • John Brown Memorial Ceremony, May 23, 2008, 12:30 pm, Allen Senior Recreation Center, Veteran tree dedication (tree sponsored by KAB). • Kerr Elementary hot dog lunch, May 30, 2008; sponsored by KAB in recognition of Reuse -a -Shoe contest winning shoe collection. Stacy Gonzales volunteered to pick up and serve hot dogs. • Boon GOLD Day, May 30, 2008. Education Specialists will be present to teach reuse and recycling. • Sustainable Landscape Seminar Series, May -July • KTB Conference, June 24-27, Irving. • Educator's Expo- Sept. 25, 2008, 4:30-6:00 pm • SmartScape (WaterWise Landscaping) Fall Seminar- Oct. 7. GCAA, Individual and Youth Awards Allen received two KTB youth leadership awards: Allen High School DECA Chapter, I" place; Matt Borders, 2" place. Both were KAB sponsored projects. 8. Environmental Center General discussion was held regarding the status of the building plans, KAB's role in the planning, and possibilities of being a LEED certified building. I Ls 9. Items of Interest to the Board • Trent Armstrong announced graffiti present at the Cottonwood Creek bridge on Bethany near Jupiter and on St. Mary Dr. • Kerry Craven is arranging a facilitated strategic planning meeting tentatively in September. The board discussed best times. Kerry will send out dates for the half day session. Jason volunteered to seek food sponsorship through his company • The idea of passing out fans to participants at Allen USA was re -introduced. Following a prototype presentation by Audra Martin and Pat Buckley, discussion was held on the purpose of the fans and whether or not the USA Celebration would be zero -waste. MOTION: Trent Armstrong moved to purchase fans with a generic recycling message that could be used for events beyond just the USA Celebration. Stacy Gonzales seconded the motion, with all in favor. • Wal-Mart announced that they recently launched a CFL collection and recycling program for residential customers. • Discussion was held regarding the Ford Middle School work day, including KAB sponsorship. 10.
