Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Pat Buckley at 6:31 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, in the Council Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, Allen, Texas 2. Vote on Arbor Day Poster Contest entries Board members voted on submitted entries. 3. Approve minutes of October 8, 2008 and October 21, 2008 meetings MOTION: Ms. Craven moved to accept the October 8, 2008 and October 21, 2008 minutes. Ms. Gonzales seconded the motion, with all in favor. 4. Receive Financial Revort/Budeet Update Mrs. Kliewer reported that $225 was given to Rountree Elementary for the MRF tour, as voted on many months ago by KAB. Educational goodies including pencils, vests, pens, stickers, and t -shirts were purchased; pansies for Allen Recycles Day was another expense. Waste Works awards for 9 schools were presented as well. These expenses left a total KAB account balance of $17,219.03 and City funds at $14,659.86. Receive reports from Strategic Plannine initiatives a. Communication Ms. Craven reported having completed environmental tips for the weekly City of Allen e - newsletter through the end of January Mr. Armstrong shared that Mark Kaufmann of ACTV is interested in providing KAB educational seminars as video -on -demand on the City website. b. Environmental Center Mr. Buchanan reported that internet research had been performed and that there are intentions of setting up tours of local facilities with a grading system to compare features. c. Environmental Education in AISD Ms. Gonzales reported that she will be taking part in the Healthy Community Summit, of which AND is also a part. Mr Shepard noted that the new AISD service center construction should be followed. d. Parks and Recreation Liaison Ms. Pruitt attended the Parks and Recreation Board meeting on Nov 10, 2008 and shared the following information: • They have many volunteer opportunities available. • Bowling for Ben is an upcoming fundraiser, benefitting a former Parks board member and husband to a past KAB board member. MOTION: Ms. Craven moved to pay $200 to sponsor a bowling team for Bowling for Ben. Ms. Pruitt seconded the motion, with all in favor. • Upcoming events • Allen USA advisory committee will begin meeting in January Donna Kliewer and possibly a KAB board member will serve on this committee. Ms. Kliewer announced that a new Urban Forester had been hired and will start on Monday, Nov 24. She will be attending KAB board meetings. 6. Discussion and vote on environmental book cover design MOTION: Mr. Armstrong moved to use the "Keep Texas Greed' design for the AISD book covers. Ms. Gonzales seconded the motion, with all in favor. 7. Discussion of Reuse a Bag and recycling education grants Ms. Martin announced that the grant -funded bags have arrived Print education "Bag Tag" designs are in the final stages and set to go to print by the end of the month. Ms. Gonzales reported that the Kroger stores on both Bethany and W McDermott would be willing to let KAB set up a give-away station to hand out bags. Ms. Kliewer added that Wal-Mart may also be willing. MOTION: Ms. Pruitt moved to purchase a banner to use during the Reuse a Bag giveaways. Mr. Shepard seconded the motion, with all in favor. 8. Discussion and vote on A Nurtured World presentation Ms. Craven presented a proposal for A Nurtured World to present to the Allen community this spring. Brief discussion on the benefits and marketing of the presentation took place. MOTION: Ms. Craven moved to sponsor A Nurtured World to present to up to 300 people on either Tuesday, April 14 or Thursday, April 16. Mr. Armstrong seconded the motion, with all in favor. 9. Receive Update on KAB Events and Projects a. Allen Recycles Day and Recycled Art Contest- Nov. 1, 2008 Mr Buchanan offered that lots of volunteers are needed to unload donations. Ms. Craven noted that it may be possible to expand to the nearby Finisar parking lot. b. EE Consortium Ms. Kliewer reported that this consortium includes many environmental awareness organizations. A "green" event is planned at Watters Creek on April 4, 2008. c. DECA student protects Brief discussion yielded an idea to help with the Reuse a Bag campaign. d. Rotary Christmas Parade- Dec. 7, 2008 Ms. Kliewer noted for all to meet at the recycling truck near the start of the parade. e. Boards and Commissions Appreciation Dinner- Dec. 12.2008 Date reminder I. Trees for Allen Ms. Kliewer reported that the tree -selling event will occur again this yea. Trees will be delivered along with a planting guide. g. Arbor Day Event is set for March 7. 2009 10. Discussion of Governor's Community Achievement Award and Keep Texas Beautiful Awards Discussion of possible nominees occurred. Ms Craven suggested that each board member sign up to write one award, with all in agreement. 11. Election of Board officers MOTION: Ms. Buckley nominated Kerry Craven for Chair. Ms. Gonzales seconded the motion, with all in favor. MOTION: Ms. Buckley nominated Stacy Gonzales for Vice -Chair. Mr. Armstrong seconded the motion, with all in favor. 12. Discussion and vote to cancel regular KAB board meeting on December 16, 2008 MOTION: Mr Shepard moved to cancel the meeting. Ms Pruitt seconded the motion, with all in favor. F, 13.
