Min - Keep Allen Beautiful Board - 2003 - 07/15 - RegularMINUTES KEEP ALLEN BEAUTIFUL BOARD REGULAR CALLED MEETING TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2003 KABB Members Present Susan Bernard, Chair Brian Casstevens Cynthia (Synne) Ferguson Ron Wheless Sue Berry Jeannie Haines (Absent) Staff Present Donna Kliewer, Recycling/Solid Waste/HHW Coordinator Call to Order With a quorum present, Keep Allen Beautiful Regular Meeting was called to order by Chair Susan Bernard at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, July 15, 2003, in the First Floor Conference Room at City Hall, 305 Century Parkway, One Allen Civic Plaza, Allen, Texas. Brian Casstevens joined the meeting at 7:42 p.m. 2. Introduction of Guests No guests were present for the meeting. 3. Approve the Minutes of the June 17, 2003 Reeular Meetine MOTION: Motion made by Susan Bemard to approve minutes. Discussion initiated to correct minutes. Minutes tabled for approval until next Board meeting. 4. Financial Report/Budget. Donna Kliewer reported $4185.00 left in project fund. Bumper stickers and pens were purchased this month. Other promotional items will be purchased with the remaining funds. Discussion of using promotional items to give to residents from the Board as a "Caught You Cleaning" or similar idea gift. 5. Parks and Recreation update. Susan Campbell was absent. Donna Kliewer gave an update to projects in progress: raptor boxes are being built; a grant for Neighborwoods, a tree program has been submitted. Discussion of the new Library gardens and the new Senior Center. 6. KAB Events: • KTB "Texas Stars/Stars Over Texas" Convention. Sue Berry shared ideas and photographs from the convention. She brought the Board several new ideas and suggestions for future projects. • Teacher Appreciation. Synne Ferguson reported that she is compiling a list of contacts at each school in order to keep them up to date with KAB projects. Discussion of the best way to make the initial contact with teachers, Principals, PTA Environmental Chairs. KEEP ALLEN BEAUTIFUL REGULAR MEETING JULY 15, 2003 PAGE Synne suggested KAB reserve the Train Depot for a reception for an AISD reception for selected contacts. o Discussion of peer teams to teach/mentor environmental school projects, Green (environmental) teams, "Trading Spaces" with school landscape projects, Adopt a School programs. o Discussion of taking cookies and brochures to teachers during teacher in-service before school starts. • Texas Recycles Day. November 8" this year; day will be similar to last year's agenda. • Rotary Holiday Parade. No information available yet, however, a tentative date of November 29" has been set. • Trees for Allen & Christmas Tree Recycling. In December fliers will go out in the Utility Bills allowing residents to purchase trees through KAB; fliers asking residents to recycle their Christmas trees will also be included in the December bill. • Old Business: Discussion of the KAB revised by-laws. Discussion included terms of office. KAB Board will add wording to abide by what City Council sets forth in pertinent areas. MOTION: Motion made by Synne Ferguson to table finalizing KAB by-laws until everyone has time to read revised version. Motion seconded by Sue Berry. Motion passed with all in favor. • Items of Interest to the Board: Brian Casstevens would like to have a strategic plan for KAB. Suggests an internal review for KAB and Council's information. o Information presented by Donna Kliewer regarding bumper stickers, book covers for AISD and the letter from the KTB Convention basket recipient. MOTION: Motion made by Synne Ferguson to purchase book covers about illegal dumping for the school year. Motion seconded by Brain Casstevens. o Susan Bernard expressed an interest in getting more laminated TxDOT illegal dumping quick reference cards. o Susan Bernard asked if KAB would like to make a donation to the Susan B. Komen Foundation in memory of former Boardmember Shelia Curtis. MOTION: Motion made by Susan Bernard to donate $100 of KAB funds to Susan B. Komen Foundation. Seconded by Brian Casstevens. All voted in favor. o Discussion of the idea of having KAB sew -on patches made for promotion. o Discussion of thanking Andrea Smith for putting together Recycle & Win promotional baskets and the KTB basket. Board voted in favor of giving Andrea a gift card to Mimi's. o Discussion of KAB using Access Allen to cover upcoming KAB events, environmental education, and/or a visual brochure. o Discussion of purchasing polo shirts. Discussion included using Avery cards for temporary business cards. o KAB asked that Collin County Constables bring the surveillance camera for a demonstration to the next meeting. o Discussion of Adopt -a -Street, Adopt -a -Walk, Adopt -a -Creek. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Board Chairman Susan Bernard and a second by Board member Syrme Ferguson, the Board voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed to adjourn the regular session of the Keep Allen Beautiful Board at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday July 15, 2003.
