Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum of the Board members present, the Regular Meeting of the Allen Public Library was called to
order by Cal Calvin, Board Chair at 7:37 p.m. on Tuesday December 9, 2004, in the Library Meeting Room of
the Allen Public Library. 2 Allen Civic Plaza, 301 Century Parkway, Allen, Texas.

2. Approve Minutes of the October 05, 2004, Regular Meeting.
The Board approved the minutes of November 09, 2004 with correction of spelling of David Wiegand's
name.
3. Review Monthly Activity Report and Suggestion Box Forms.
The suggestions included requests to advertise on library bulletin boards, for more leniencies of fines
when books are overdue, and to make video rentals two weeks.
The Monthly Activity Report was reviewed by the board. The Board learned that there are
approximately 35,000 Allen Library card patrons and that anyone who hasn't used his or her card in the
last three years is purged from the system.
4. Presentation by David Wiegard of Sculptureworks.
David Wiegand explained how Sculptureworks began and the juried process used for accepting
sculptors and their work in the program. He indicated he was willing to work out a relationship for a
selection process that would result in sculpture themes acceptable to the community
otion. Upon a motion made by Board member Donna Drews Various and a second by Board member
John Ross, the Board voted (6) for and none (0) opposed after hearing David Wiegand's presentation,
king questions, and listening to responses, the Library Board recommends that the Library participate
in the Sculptureworks program.
5. Update on NETLS Meeting.
Board members, Donald Wing, Ruth Pringle, and Library Director, Barbara Buehler attended the
NETLS meeting. The keynote speaker was Jeff Crilley, a Fox 4 television reporter, who spoke on
"How to Keep the Media Barking Up Your Tree."
Other Business
Barbara reported that the new library building will be substantially complete by December 15, 2004.
The current building will close on December 30, 2004 and the moving company is expected to start
moving the library on January 3, 2005. The library will be closed to patrons for a month.
Board members were urged to contact legislators about restoring funding for the databases before they
went to Austin after the holidays. Addresses were distributed for letter writing.
