R-1354-9-95RESOLUTION NO. 1354-9-95 (R) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALLEN, COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS, APPROVING THE NAMING OF A 109 ACRE COMMUNITY PARK LOCATED ON COTTONWOOD CREEK, WHICH INCLUDES 100 ACRES OF LAND RECENTLY PURCHASED BY THE CITY AND AN EXISTING PARK SITE, ST. MARY'S, "ALLEN STATION", DUE TO THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RAILROAD TRACK BORDERING AND DELINEATING THE WEST PARK BOUNDARY; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the townsite of Allen originated as a 360 -acre land grant in 1850 from the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, in 1871, the town was founded by a purchasing agent of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and named for Ebenezer Allen, a former Texas Attorney General and promoter of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad; and WHEREAS, an interurban railway through Allen was in operation from 1908-1948; and WHEREAS, the original railroad station still remains on Butler Street and has received historical designation; and WHEREAS, naming of this park due to the historical significance of the Railroad and its role in the growth of Allen is allowed by Resolution No. 874-9-88(R) if approved by Council; and WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Board fully endorses naming of the site, "Allen Station", and recommends Council approve said name; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALLEN, COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS THAT: SECTION 1: Upon consideration of the recommendation by the Allen Parks and Recreation Board to name the 100 acre community park "Allen Station", said naming is found to be appropriate due to the historical significance of the railway and is hereby approved. SECTION 2: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage.
