R-1384-11-95RESOLUTION NO. 1384-11-95 (R) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALLEN, COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ALLEN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES ENCOURAGING HEALTHY AND DRUG FREE YOUTH ACTIVITIES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON NOVEMBER 17, 1995 - JANUARY 2, 1996. WHEREAS, tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs have reached national epidemic proportions, with the 15 to 24 year old age group dying at a rate which is higher than that of any other age group; and WHEREAS, the City of Allen and the Allen Independent School District are sponsoring "Sober for the Season" to promote a clear and consistent message to youth that tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use is harmful, and WHEREAS, individuals and groups in business, government, law enforcement, education, religious institutions, sports teams, and service organizations, as well as youth, physicians, senior citizens, and parents have a vested interest in keeping youth safe during the holidays. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALLEN, COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS THAT: Section 1: The City Council of the City of Allen supports the "Sober for the Season" program as an effort to combat the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs in our city and encourages other members of our community to launch a visible and unified prevention, education and involvement effort directed toward youth during this holiday season. These efforts should reflect the qualities of high expectations for youth, opportunities for meaningful participation, and caring relationships with adults and peers. Members of the community have shown their support for this program when they: • communicate their expectations for youth to be drug-free; • assure that youth attend parties that are free of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; • plan alternative transportation arrangements in the event that the driver is under the influence; and • host and supervise drug-free parties for youth. Section 2: The Allen City Council directs that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Allen Independent School District and to any other interested parties and that the contents of this resolution be made available to the local n uciia including being broadcast on the city's cable television channel.
